R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, Many proud residents of Shelby County will be in 1-2 Austin on February 20, 2001, to celebrate their county's rich 1-3 history and numerous contributions to the Lone Star State during 1-4 Shelby County Day at the State Capitol; and 1-5 WHEREAS, Located deep in the East Texas Piney Woods, the area 1-6 was organized under the Mexican government in 1835 as Tenehaw 1-7 Municipality; the following year the Congress of the Republic of 1-8 Texas reconstituted this municipality as Shelby County, naming it 1-9 in honor of American Revolutionary War hero Isaac Shelby; during 1-10 the transition, the county's most important town, Nashville, was 1-11 renamed Shelbyville; and 1-12 WHEREAS, The county's early history was both exciting and 1-13 dramatic; it is remembered especially for a long and violent feud 1-14 in the 1840s that became known as the Regulator-Moderator War; and 1-15 WHEREAS, After peace had been restored, the county moved its 1-16 seat to an area called White Cottage in 1866 and rechristened it 1-17 Center, due to its geographic location in Shelby County; nestled in 1-18 this lovely town are the Shelby County Museum and the beautiful 1-19 county courthouse, which was added to the National Register of 1-20 Historic Places in 1971 and is the only Irish-castle-style 1-21 courthouse remaining in the United States; and 1-22 WHEREAS, This area has been blessed with an abundance of 1-23 natural resources, including dense forests and rich bottomlands; in 1-24 addition to timber and cattle production, the county has a 2-1 significant poultry industry and leads the state in its inventory 2-2 of broilers; and 2-3 WHEREAS, The most important ingredient in this dynamic and 2-4 prosperous economy, though, is the citizenry of Shelby County, a 2-5 group deeply committed to education, health care, and the 2-6 preservation of their storied past for future generations; and 2-7 WHEREAS, The residents of Shelby County are justifiably proud 2-8 of their noteworthy region and the significant role its citizens 2-9 have played in the development of Texas, and they are truly worthy 2-10 of special legislative recognition; now, therefore, be it 2-11 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas 2-12 Legislature hereby recognize February 20, 2001, as Shelby County 2-13 Day at the State Capitol and extend a warm welcome to the county's 2-14 visiting residents.
