                                 R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, The House of Representatives of the State of Texas
 1-2     is proud to recognize Karen E. Jackson of Houston for her
 1-3     outstanding contributions in the fight against breast cancer; and
 1-4           WHEREAS, Thousands of African-American families have suffered
 1-5     devastating losses because of breast cancer, and many more will;
 1-6     breast cancer is the second-leading cancer killer of
 1-7     African-American women; and
 1-8           WHEREAS, Breast cancer can be overcome, however, and one of
 1-9     the strongest weapons in the fight against this disease is early
1-10     detection; breast cancer patients have a five-year survival rate of
1-11     over 95 percent if the disease is detected early; and
1-12           WHEREAS, Women who perform regular self-examinations and who
1-13     receive yearly mammograms put themselves at a distinct advantage in
1-14     their fight against breast cancer; therefore, it is crucial that
1-15     women in the United States have access to information concerning
1-16     early detection and prevention; and
1-17           WHEREAS, A dynamic and inspiring Texan, Karen E. Jackson is
1-18     working to ensure that African-American women receive lifesaving
1-19     information about breast cancer through her organization, Sisters
1-20     Network, Incorporated; and
1-21           WHEREAS, Founded in 1994 and headquartered in Houston,
1-22     Sisters Network, Incorporated, is widely recognized by the medical
1-23     community as an invaluable resource for African-American women;
1-24     with more than 25 chapters across the nation, Sisters Network,
 2-1     Incorporated, is dedicated to saving the lives of African-American
 2-2     women through community workshops, corporate partnerships, private
 2-3     donations, and its annual African-American Breast Cancer National
 2-4     Conference; and
 2-5           WHEREAS, By encouraging women across the United States to
 2-6     take a positive approach to fighting breast cancer and through its
 2-7     support of breast cancer research, Sisters Network, Incorporated,
 2-8     has participated in saving the lives of thousands; the State of
 2-9     Texas is indeed proud to be the national headquarters of such a
2-10     noble organization; now, therefore, be it
2-11           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas
2-12     Legislature hereby commend the altruism of Karen E. Jackson and
2-13     extend a sincere thank you to Sisters Network, Incorporated, for
2-14     the vital lifesaving work it performs for Texans and for women
2-15     across the nation; and, be it further
2-16           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-17     prepared for this esteemed lady and her organization as an
2-18     expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
