                                 R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, On February 21, 2001, many proud residents from
 1-2     Comanche County will gather in Austin to celebrate Comanche County
 1-3     Day at the State Capitol; and
 1-4           WHEREAS, Formed from Coryell and Bosque counties by the Texas
 1-5     Legislature in 1856, Comanche County comprises more than 937 square
 1-6     miles of rolling, hilly terrain and is named for the Comanche
 1-7     Indians, whose territory once included the area; and
 1-8           WHEREAS, The county has undergone many changes through the
 1-9     years and now features an economy that revolves around dairies,
1-10     agribusiness, food processing, various manufacturing and industry,
1-11     and tourism; moreover, its fertile soil and climate make it a
1-12     leading producer of peanuts, pecans, watermelons, cantaloupes, and
1-13     milk; and
1-14           WHEREAS, Located approximately 70 miles southeast of Abilene,
1-15     Comanche serves as the county seat and is home to such noteworthy
1-16     attractions as the Fleming Oak, Comanche County Historical Museum,
1-17     and the Old Cora, which is the oldest original existing courthouse
1-18     in Texas; other towns in the county include De Leon, Energy,
1-19     Gustine, Hasse, Proctor, and Sidney; and
1-20           WHEREAS, This geographically diverse region also offers ample
1-21     opportunities for fishing, boating, hunting, and a wide variety of
1-22     outdoor and water activities; in addition, the county takes great
1-23     pride in its storied history and enjoys upholding its unique
1-24     heritage with traditional events such as the livestock show, peach
 2-1     and melon festival, rodeo, and Comanche Pow-Wow; and
 2-2           WHEREAS, Residents and visitors can keep up with all the news
 2-3     and events in the county and across the state through the Comanche
 2-4     Chief newspaper, which began publishing in 1873 and holds the
 2-5     singular distinction of being the county's oldest business
 2-6     institution; and
 2-7           WHEREAS, Comanche County recalls an era of simpler times and
 2-8     wholesome values; today,  the county has a population of more than
 2-9     14,600 people and its citizens are readily embracing the myriad
2-10     challenges and opportunities of the future; and
2-11           WHEREAS, It is indeed appropriate that Comanche County and
2-12     its fine citizens be recognized for their contributions and
2-13     accomplishments; now, therefore, be it
2-14           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas
2-15     Legislature hereby recognize February 21, 2001, as Comanche County
2-16     Day at the State Capitol and extend to its citizens sincere best
2-17     wishes for success and happiness; and, be it further
2-18           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-19     prepared for the Comanche County delegation as an expression of
2-20     high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
