                                 R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, Involved parents and community leaders of Edgewood
 1-2     Independent School District in San Antonio are visiting Austin on
 1-3     February 21, 2001, to meet with Texas legislators; and
 1-4           WHEREAS, Edgewood I.S.D. historically has served as a symbol
 1-5     of the challenges faced and the opportunities offered by public
 1-6     schools; and
 1-7           WHEREAS, Edgewood I.S.D.--sustained by heartfelt community
 1-8     support, deep parental involvement, and a district-wide commitment
 1-9     to excellence in education--today serves as a symbol of hope for
1-10     future generations; and
1-11           WHEREAS, Edgewood I.S.D. has built a program of model schools
1-12     that include the Edgewood Fine Arts and Communications Academy, the
1-13     Math and Science Academy, the Careers and Technology Academy, and
1-14     the Accelerated Learning Middle School; and
1-15           WHEREAS, Additional exemplary programs that offer dual
1-16     language Spanish immersion, are provided to help students master
1-17     reading and writing in both English and Spanish; and
1-18           WHEREAS, Edgewood I.S.D. has demonstrated its commitment to
1-19     educational excellence by achieving "recognized" status on district
1-20     performance ratings; and
1-21           WHEREAS, The dedication and hard work of its students has
1-22     also resulted in a demonstration of athletic prowess, including the
 2-1     recent victory as district champions by the Mighty Rockets boys
 2-2     basketball team; and
 2-3           WHEREAS, The namesakes of Edgewood schools--from Henry B.
 2-4     Gonzalez Elementary School to John F. Kennedy High School--serve
 2-5     each day to encourage the aspirations of Edgewood students and to
 2-6     reflect the dedication of Edgewood teachers and administrators; and
 2-7           WHEREAS, Edgewood I.S.D. continues to improve in excellence
 2-8     despite the financial drain caused by the Horizon Voucher program;
 2-9     now, therefore, be it
2-10           RESOLVED, That the House of the State of Texas, 77th
2-11     Legislature, hereby commend the parents, teachers, administrators
2-12     and community leaders of Edgewood Independent School District on
2-13     the occasion of their visit to the Texas Capitol; and be it further
2-14           RESOLVED, That the Texas Senate pay tribute to the Edgewood
2-15     community for its ongoing commitment to educational excellence for
2-16     its students.  "Si se puede!"
