No. 331 77R7460 MJS-D R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, On March 7, 2001, many proud residents from Hunt 1-2 County are gathering in Austin to celebrate Hunt County Day at the 1-3 State Capitol; and 1-4 WHEREAS, Formed from Nacogdoches and Fannin counties in 1846, 1-5 the county is named for Memucan Hunt, who was a prominent 1-6 legislator and secretary of the Texas Navy and who became the first 1-7 Texas minister to Washington; and 1-8 WHEREAS, While its rich Blackland soil made it a good 1-9 cotton-producing region, the county has undergone many changes 1-10 through the years and now has a multifaceted economy that features 1-11 manufacturing, agribusiness, education, and the tourism industry; 1-12 Hunt County is home to several Fortune 500 companies and many 1-13 residents who commute to the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex; and 1-14 WHEREAS, Greenville serves as the county seat and has 1-15 numerous attractions, such as the American Cotton Museum, the 1-16 Garden of Peace, and Mathews Prairie Reserve; and 1-17 WHEREAS, This geographically diverse region offers ample 1-18 opportunities for fishing, boating, hunting, and a wide variety of 1-19 other water and outdoor sports, and the county takes great pride in 1-20 upholding its unique heritage with traditional events, including 1-21 the annual Bois d'Arc Bash and the Cotton Jubilee; and 1-22 WHEREAS, Texas A&M University--Commerce is also located in 1-23 Hunt County; an institution that is committed to academic 1-24 excellence, it received high marks in U.S. News & World Report's 2-1 rankings of America's best colleges; and 2-2 WHEREAS, The county's people are readily embracing the myriad 2-3 challenges and opportunities of the future while retaining their 2-4 colorful history and rich culture; they have made significant 2-5 contributions to the Lone Star State, and it is most appropriate to 2-6 pay tribute to them at this time; now, therefore, be it 2-7 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas 2-8 Legislature hereby recognize March 7, 2001, as Hunt County Day at 2-9 the State Capitol and extend to its residents sincere best wishes 2-10 for the future.
