R E S O L U T I O N
1-1 WHEREAS, The passing of the Reverend Dr. Zephaniah Phillips
1-2 of La Marque on February 4, 2001, at the age of 71, brought a great
1-3 loss to the family and friends of this esteemed individual; and
1-4 WHEREAS, Reverend Phillips was born on March 26, 1929, and
1-5 attended school in Wharton County; he sought a higher education and
1-6 graduated from Conroe Normal Industrial College; and
1-7 WHEREAS, In addition to working for Monsanto Chemical Company
1-8 for 32 years until his retirement, Reverend Phillips led the
1-9 congregation at Greater Bell Zion Missionary Baptist Church for 33
1-10 years; he participated in numerous religious organizations,
1-11 including the Old Landmark Baptist Association, Texas State
1-12 Missionary Baptist Convention, and Mainland Baptist Minister's
1-13 Association of Galveston and Galveston County; and
1-14 WHEREAS, A U.S. Army veteran, Reverend Phillips worked
1-15 tirelessly for his community; he belonged to the Knights of Pythias
1-16 and the Concerned Citizens and Ministers of Galveston County,
1-17 served as president of the Mainland Task Force, and was a lifetime
1-18 member of the N.A.A.C.P.; he also sat on the board of the Mainland
1-19 Center Hospital and taught at Conroe Extension College; and
1-20 WHEREAS, In Reverend Phillips the members of Greater Bell
1-21 Zion Baptist Church and the citizens of Galveston County found a
1-22 teacher, a counselor, and a stalwart friend, and it is indeed
1-23 appropriate that his great contributions to the welfare of his
1-24 community be recognized at this time; now, therefore, be it
2-1 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas
2-2 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of the Reverend Dr.
2-3 Zephaniah Phillips and extend sincere sympathy to the members of
2-4 his family: to his wife, James Anna Phillips; to his children,
2-5 Alvin Phillips, Sr., Calvin Phillips, Sr., the Reverend Danny Ray
2-6 Phillips, Sr., the Reverend Anthony Phillips, Sr., Cheryl Joiner,
2-7 Karen Harris, and the Reverend Dalwenda D. Phillips; to his
2-8 sisters, Sedalia Beaver, Robbie Shelton, Wessie Dobbins, Callie
2-9 West, and Minnette Smith; to his 15 grandchildren, 4
2-10 great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives;
2-11 and to his numerous friends; and, be it further
2-12 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-13 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
2-14 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of the
2-15 Reverend Dr. Zephaniah Phillips.
