R E S O L U T I O N
1-1 WHEREAS, Coach Leon Spencer of Trinity Valley Community
1-2 College has won more games than any other head coach in the history
1-3 of Texas junior college basketball; and
1-4 WHEREAS, He attained this singular distinction on January 17,
1-5 2001, when his Cardinals took a thrilling 72-70 home court triumph
1-6 over San Jacinto Junior College, giving Coach Spencer his 744th
1-7 career win; and
1-8 WHEREAS, During his 37-year tenure at Trinity Valley, "Big
1-9 Red" Spencer has led his teams to 13 conference championships and
1-10 numerous appearances in the NJCAA national tournament; and
1-11 WHEREAS, A recipient of many other well-deserved accolades,
1-12 he is an inductee of the National Junior College Coaches Athletic
1-13 Association Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame and a recipient of the
1-14 Outstanding Alumni Coaches Award by Texas A&M-Commerce; and
1-15 WHEREAS, Coach Spencer's accomplishments are a source of
1-16 tremendous pride to the students and faculty at Trinity Valley
1-17 Community College, as well as his many supporters in the community,
1-18 and it is indeed appropriate that he receive special legislative
1-19 recognition at this time; now, therefore, be it
1-20 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas
1-21 Legislature hereby honor Coach Leon Spencer of Trinity Valley
1-22 Community College, the winningest junior college basketball coach
1-23 in the State of Texas, and extend to him sincere best wishes for
1-24 continued success; and, be it further
2-1 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-2 prepared for Coach Spencer as an expression of high regard by the
2-3 Texas House of Representatives.
