                                 R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, May 6-12, 2001, marks the observance of Brain Tumor
 1-2     Awareness Week, and the public education effort sponsored by the
 1-3     North American Brain Tumor Coalition is indeed a significant event;
 1-4     and
 1-5           WHEREAS, A network of charitable organizations dedicated to
 1-6     eradicating brain tumors, the North American Brain Tumor Coalition
 1-7     annually hosts Brain Tumor Awareness Week to increase public
 1-8     awareness about brain tumors and to encourage increased support for
 1-9     research and treatment; and
1-10           WHEREAS, In 2001, more than 100,000 people in the United
1-11     States will be diagnosed with a primary or metastatic brain tumor;
1-12     because of their location at the control center for thought,
1-13     emotion, and physical function, these tumors are extremely
1-14     difficult to treat, and the cure rate for people afflicted with
1-15     them is substantially lower than that for most other types of
1-16     cancer; and
1-17           WHEREAS, In addition, brain tumors are the second fastest
1-18     growing cause of cancer death among those 65 or older and are the
1-19     second leading cause of cancer death in children age 15 and under
1-20     and in adults up to age 34; and
1-21           WHEREAS, The cause of brain tumors is still unknown, and no
1-22     behavioral modifications have proven effective in reducing the
1-23     risk; these facts necessitate the need for increased research into
1-24     finding a cure, as well as emphasize the importance of heightening
 2-1     public awareness on this serious issue; and
 2-2           WHEREAS, Brain Tumor Awareness Week is truly an exemplary way
 2-3     to educate the public while promoting continued and thorough
 2-4     research into the causes and prevention of brain tumors, and this
 2-5     week will no doubt be highly beneficial to countless Texans; now,
 2-6     therefore, be it
 2-7           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas
 2-8     Legislature hereby recognize May 6-12, 2001, as Brain Tumor
 2-9     Awareness Week and encourage all Texans to participate in this
2-10     noteworthy event.
