R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, From February 26 to March 2, 2001, the African 1-2 American Museum is exhibiting numerous works of art and artifacts 1-3 from African Americans in the rotunda of the State Capitol; and 1-4 WHEREAS, Founded in 1974, the African American Museum was 1-5 initially a part of the Bishop College Special Collections; since 1-6 1993 the museum has been located in its own building in Fair Park, 1-7 and it remains the only museum in the Southwest devoted to the 1-8 preservation and exhibition of African American artistic, cultural, 1-9 and historical materials; and 1-10 WHEREAS, Dr. Harry Robinson, Jr., has long served as the 1-11 museum's president and CEO, and he has dedicated himself to the 1-12 cause of preserving African American heritage through his work with 1-13 the museum and through his service with many noteworthy 1-14 professional and civic organizations; and 1-15 WHEREAS, The African American Museum features a diverse 1-16 display of black art and history that is housed in four vaulted 1-17 galleries; its permanent collections include African Art, African 1-18 American Fine Art, and The Billy R. Allen Folk Art Collection; 1-19 moreover, the research library and archives house several 1-20 historical collections, while living black culture can be 1-21 experienced through informative and entertaining programs in the 1-22 museum's educational plaza; and 1-23 WHEREAS, The display of a sampling of these important 1-24 artifacts in the State Capitol's rotunda provides an outstanding 2-1 opportunity to not only celebrate the many artistic contributions 2-2 of African Americans but also to praise the preservation efforts of 2-3 all those associated with the African American Museum; now, 2-4 therefore, be it 2-5 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas 2-6 Legislature hereby honor Dr. Harry Robinson, Jr., and the African 2-7 American Museum and extend to them sincere appreciation for 2-8 displaying a portion of their vast collection at the State Capitol.
