No. 380 77R6096 JKB-D R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, Jonestown Reserve Officer Ysidro Torres III recently 1-2 received the first 957 Award from the Texas Reserve Law Officers 1-3 Association, and his bravery and selflessness are truly worthy of 1-4 special legislative recognition; and 1-5 WHEREAS, The 957 Award is named for House Bill 957 passed by 1-6 the 76th Legislature, which allows reserve peace officers who hold 1-7 full peace officer licenses to carry a weapon off duty; the award 1-8 acknowledges meritorious acts by Texas Reserve Peace Officers; and 1-9 WHEREAS, The 957 Award was presented to Mr. Torres in 1-10 recognition of his courageous actions on August 15, 1999, when he 1-11 saved the lives of several Austin residents; and 1-12 WHEREAS, Reserve Officer Torres was working at U-Haul, where 1-13 he held a full-time position, when a disgruntled customer armed 1-14 with a shotgun entered the business and began firing; as the 1-15 business's workers and customers sought refuge, Mr. Torres 1-16 exchanged fire with the perpetrator, killing the suspect and 1-17 sustaining serious personal injury; and 1-18 WHEREAS, Mr. Torres demonstrated the quick-thinking and 1-19 heroism for which Texas law enforcement officers are renowned and 1-20 saved the lives of several Texans on that fateful day, and his 1-21 remarkable act of bravery is most deserving of praise; now, 1-22 therefore, be it 1-23 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas 1-24 Legislature hereby congratulate Ysidro Torres III on his receipt of 2-1 the first 957 Award and commend him for his exceptional act of 2-2 gallantry and composure in the face of danger; and, be it further 2-3 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-4 prepared for Mr. Torres as an expression of high regard by the 2-5 Texas House of Representatives.
