R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, On February 27, 2001, many proud residents of Athens
 1-2     gather in Austin to celebrate Athens Day at the State Capitol; and
 1-3           WHEREAS, Though it was first incorporated in 1856, Athens did
 1-4     not begin its steady development until it was reincorporated in
 1-5     1901; since that time, this charming North Texas town has seen
 1-6     significant growth and the emergence of a dynamic citizenry; and
 1-7           WHEREAS, The fertile terrain and temperate climate of the
 1-8     area have made Athens an agribusiness center; in addition, the city
 1-9     is an outdoor enthusiast's paradise, providing opportunities for
1-10     scuba diving, picnicking, and many other recreational adventures;
1-11     and
1-12           WHEREAS, Home of Trinity Valley Community College, this
1-13     unique town features many exciting annual events, including the
1-14     Texas Fiddlers' Contest and Reunion, the Black-Eyed Pea Jamboree,
1-15     the Athens Triathlon, and the Fletcher Davis Hamburger Cook-off;
1-16     several cultural and tourist attractions grace the landscape of
1-17     this city as well, including the East Texas Arboretum, the
1-18     Henderson County Historical Museum, the Murchison Galleries, and
1-19     the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center, which features 300,000
1-20     gallons of aquarium exhibits and every major species of freshwater
1-21     fish found in Texas; and
1-22           WHEREAS, While visiting the State Capitol, the Athens
1-23     contingent will meet with representatives of various committees and
1-24     state agencies to discuss issues of interest to local residents;
 2-1     and
 2-2           WHEREAS, This lovely city continues to be one of the Lone
 2-3     Star State's great assets and an outstanding place in which to
 2-4     live, work, and raise a family, and it is indeed appropriate that
 2-5     the citizens of Athens be given special recognition at this time;
 2-6     now, therefore, be it
 2-7           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas
 2-8     Legislature hereby recognize February 27, 2001, as Athens Day at
 2-9     the State Capitol and join the citizens of that city in paying
2-10     tribute to one of Texas' fine communities.
