R E S O L U T I O N
1-1 WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives is pleased to
1-2 commend Jack Miller for his vision and leadership both as a
1-3 businessman and as an exemplary volunteer in the city of Galveston
1-4 and Galveston County; and
1-5 WHEREAS, A born-on-the-island native of Galveston, Mr. Miller
1-6 graduated from Galveston's Ball High School, attended The
1-7 University of Texas at Austin, and served in the United States Army
1-8 during World War II; he began his 50-year career in the furniture
1-9 business at the family-owned Schreiber and Miller Furniture Company
1-10 in Galveston and La Marque; and
1-11 WHEREAS, Respected for his long-standing community service,
1-12 Mr. Miller was on the first committee of the Galveston School
1-13 District to studyintegration and was a leader in the effort to
1-14 integrate local lunch counters and restaurants; moreover, he has
1-15 made it a priority to improve the health of Galveston County
1-16 residents while serving as chairman of the Board of Governors of
1-17 St. Mary's Hospital and has also contributed his expertise as
1-18 president of the Galveston Rotary Club, as vice president of the
1-19 Chamber of Commerce, and on the boards of directors of the
1-20 Salvation Army and the United Fund and United Way of Galveston; and
1-21 WHEREAS, This esteemed gentleman has deservedly been
1-22 recognized for his profound work in the areas of equality and
1-23 justice; in 1985, he was named the recipient of the Rabbi Henry
1-24 Cohen Humanitarian Award, which is given to those who most
2-1 exemplify the qualities of brotherhood, justice, and dignity with
2-2 no thought of reward, and in 1990 the Anti-Defamation League of
2-3 B'nai B'rith honored him with the Torch of Liberty for his lifelong
2-4 commitment to preserving liberty, counteracting bigotry, and
2-5 advancing the cause of human rights; and
2-6 WHEREAS, In addition, The Rider Family Fund provided a fully
2-7 endowed Universal Access scholarship to Galveston College in
2-8 Mr. Miller's honor in 1988, and Schreiber and Miller Furniture
2-9 Company was honored that same year when it was named the Retailer
2-10 of the Year by the Retailers Marketing Guild; and
2-11 WHEREAS, The business community has been greatly influenced
2-12 by Mr. Miller as evidenced by his leadership as president of the
2-13 Retail Merchants Association, director of the Texas Retail
2-14 Furniture Dealers, vice president of the Retail Furniture
2-15 Association of the Southwest, president of the Galveston County
2-16 Retail Furniture Association, and as an elected member of the
2-17 American Marketing Congress; and
2-18 WHEREAS, A man of strong faith, Mr. Miller has served on the
2-19 board of directors for Congregation Beth Jacob in Galveston, on the
2-20 board of the Galveston County Jewish Welfare Association, and on
2-21 the board of directors of Galveston's B'nai B'rith; and
2-22 WHEREAS, Family and friends have consistently played the most
2-23 important role in his life, and they have all benefited from his
2-24 wisdom, warmth, and valued counsel; he has been supported in all
2-25 his endeavors by his beloved wife of 57 years, Gertie Miller, and
2-26 their three children, Shellie Lewis, Cindy Nale, and Wayne Miller,
2-27 as well as their sons-in-law and four grandchildren; and
3-1 WHEREAS, Jack Miller has generously devoted his time and
3-2 energy to helping many charitable organizations through the years
3-3 and his selfless service has made a positive and lasting difference
3-4 in the Galveston community; now, therefore, be it
3-5 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas
3-6 Legislature hereby commend Jack Miller for his many good works and
3-7 extend to him best wishes for continued success; and, be it further
3-8 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
3-9 prepared for Mr. Miller as an expression of high regard by the
3-10 Texas House of Representatives.
