R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, Dr. James L. Sweatt III of Dallas has been chosen to 1-2 receive an Outstanding Texan award by the Texas Legislative Black 1-3 Caucus in recognition of his many notable professional 1-4 contributions; and 1-5 WHEREAS, The Outstanding Texan award was created to honor 1-6 individuals who have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to 1-7 improving, developing, and enriching the lives of their fellowman; 1-8 and 1-9 WHEREAS, An accomplished thoracic and vascular surgeon, Dr. 1-10 Sweatt maintains a thriving medical practice; he is also a member 1-11 of the Texas State University System Board of Regents, which 1-12 oversees Angelo State, Lamar, Sam Houston State, Southwest Texas 1-13 State, and Sul Ross State universities, as well as Sul Ross State 1-14 University--Rio Grande College; and 1-15 WHEREAS, Among Dr. Sweatt's many professional affiliations 1-16 are the Dallas County Medical Society, of which he was president, 1-17 Texas Medical Association, American College of Surgeons, Society of 1-18 Thoracic Surgeons, and American Medical Association, and he is also 1-19 a Southwestern Medical Foundation trustee; and 1-20 WHEREAS, Dr. Sweatt is a graduate of Middlebury College and 1-21 Washington University School of Medicine and served his internship 1-22 at Cleveland Metropolitan General Hospital, with residencies at the 1-23 University of Colorado Medical Center and The University of Texas 1-24 Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas; and 2-1 WHEREAS, Before entering into private practice, he served his 2-2 nation with distinction as a flight surgeon for the United States 2-3 Air Force from 1963 to 1965; and 2-4 WHEREAS, He also devotes his time and energy to his community 2-5 as a member of the board of Grace Presbyterian Village and as an 2-6 elder at St. Luke Presbyterian Church; and 2-7 WHEREAS, Dr. Sweatt has applied his considerable skill and 2-8 knowledge to significantly improve the lives of many Texans, and it 2-9 is indeed appropriate that he receive special recognition at this 2-10 time; now, therefore, be it 2-11 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas 2-12 Legislature hereby congratulate Dr. James L. Sweatt III on being 2-13 named an Outstanding Texan by the Texas Legislative Black Caucus 2-14 and extend to him sincere best wishes for success and happiness in 2-15 his future endeavors; and, be it further 2-16 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-17 prepared for Dr. Sweatt as an expression of high regard by the 2-18 Texas House of Representatives.
