R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives takes pleasure in 1-2 recognizing boxer Jesus "El Matador" Chavez, who won the 1-3 Superfeatherweight North American Boxing Federation title on 1-4 February 23, 2001, at the Frank Erwin Center in Austin; and 1-5 WHEREAS, His win was the outstanding athlete's 30th straight 1-6 victory; El Matador has an overall record of 34 wins and one loss, 1-7 and 25 of the wins were knockouts; and 1-8 WHEREAS, An excellent boxer, Mr. Chavez displayed a 1-9 tremendous power, finishing the fight with Tom Johnson with a TKO 1-10 in the seventh round; and 1-11 WHEREAS, The 28-year-old boxer arrived in Austin in 1994 and 1-12 quickly established himself as a world-class fighter, winning the 1-13 North American Boxing Federation Superfeatherweight title and 1-14 rising to the number one ranking in the WBC Superfeatherweight 1-15 division; and 1-16 WHEREAS, This civic-minded young gentleman has made it a 1-17 priority to work with at-risk young people to discourage gang 1-18 involvement and provide an example of the power of focus and 1-19 dedication possible in a person's life; and 1-20 WHEREAS, Granted permanent residency status on February 7, 1-21 2001, Jesus Chavez is an outstanding athlete and a notable role 1-22 model, and it is appropriate to take this opportunity to honor him 1-23 and express sincere appreciation to him for his contributions to 1-24 the youth of the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it 2-1 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas 2-2 Legislature hereby extend hearty congratulations to Jesus "El 2-3 Matador" Chavez on winning the Superfeatherweight North American 2-4 Boxing Federation title and extend to him sincere best wishes for 2-5 success in the future; and, be it further 2-6 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-7 prepared for Mr. Chavez as an expression of high regard by the 2-8 Texas House of Representatives.
