By McReynolds H.R. No. 417 77R8544 GMW-D R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives takes great pride 1-2 in paying tribute to the Honorable Pitser H. Garrison by 1-3 recognizing March 7, 2001, as Pitser H. Garrison Day at the State 1-4 Capitol; and 1-5 WHEREAS, A native Texan, this esteemed gentleman was born in 1-6 Lufkin and is the son of a respected public official and the 1-7 grandson of a Texas Senator; an outstanding student and athlete, he 1-8 graduated from Lufkin High School and Stephen F. Austin State 1-9 University and earned a law degree from The University of Texas at 1-10 Austin; and 1-11 WHEREAS, Mr. Garrison was commissioned as a second lieutenant 1-12 with the Eighth Service Command of the U.S. Army and proudly served 1-13 his country during World War II; after his military career, he 1-14 enjoyed success as an attorney, as president and chief executive 1-15 officer of Lufkin National Bank and First City National Bank, and 1-16 as a public servant with the City of Lufkin; and 1-17 WHEREAS, In 1970, this civic-minded gentleman became the 1-18 mayor of Lufkin, a position in which he would serve with 1-19 distinction for 18 years; Mayor Garrison's exemplary leadership 1-20 helped Lufkin earn acclaim as one of the most progressive small 1-21 cities in the Lone Star State, and his nearly two decades in the 1-22 post of mayor is the longest such tenure in the city's history; and 1-23 WHEREAS, He has also donated his time and expertise to 1-24 numerous noteworthy organizations, including serving as chairman of 2-1 the Angelina County Appraisal District and as president of the 2-2 Angelina County Chamber of Commerce and the Deep East Texas Council 2-3 of Governments; moreover, he has been presented a number of 2-4 well-deserved accolades, including the East Texan of the Year Award 2-5 from the East Texas Chamber of Commerce and the Angelina Award, 2-6 Lufkin's highest honor for community service; and 2-7 WHEREAS, Mr. Garrison has worked diligently throughout his 2-8 life to the great benefit of East Texas, making a substantial 2-9 impact on the region's civic, political, social, and community 2-10 affairs; he is most certainly a distinguished and proud Texan of 2-11 immense character and conviction, and it is truly a privilege to 2-12 honor him at this time; now, therefore, be it 2-13 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas 2-14 Legislature hereby recognize March 7, 2001, as Pitser H. Garrison 2-15 Day at the State Capitol and commend the Honorable Pitser H. 2-16 Garrison for his myriad achievements; and, be it further 2-17 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-18 prepared for Mr. Garrison as an expression of high regard by the 2-19 Texas House of Representatives.
