No. 420 77R8378 WMS-D R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, Kingwood High School has a tradition of excellence 1-2 in athletics and other activities which few schools can equal, and 1-3 over the past two years students from this respected institution 1-4 have continued to excel in myriad forms of endeavor; and 1-5 WHEREAS, In the arts, three of Kingwood's orchestra members 1-6 earned All-State honors in the 1999 and 2000 school years, and an 1-7 outstanding singer placed on the All-State choir; in addition, the 1-8 Kingwood High School Choir is scheduled to perform at Carnegie Hall 1-9 this spring; and 1-10 WHEREAS, Kingwood's artistic triumphs were not limited to the 1-11 field of music, as the school took 11 state championships at the 1-12 Visual Art Scholastic Event and had seven national finalists in the 1-13 Scholastic Art Awards; in addition, the school's one act play was a 1-14 state finalist, a KHS student won first place and $5,000 for an 1-15 article she wrote for Guideposts for Teens, six other students 1-16 garnered Gold and Silver Key awards in the Scholastic Writing 1-17 Contest, and one student placed second in the state in editorial 1-18 writing and one placed first in spelling; and 1-19 WHEREAS, In addition, a Kingwood student was Grand Champion 1-20 Art Winner at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, four others 1-21 were top winners in the Rodeo Art Auction, and two students won 1-22 $10,000 college scholarships; and 1-23 WHEREAS, Also well represented in foreign language 1-24 competitions, a Kingwood scholar scored 99 of 100 on the National 2-1 German Exam and won one first place and two second place honors at 2-2 Level III of the regional German competition; a Kingwood Latin 2-3 student earned a perfect score on the National Latin Exam, and the 2-4 Latin Club scrapbook took first place at the Texas State Junior 2-5 Classical League State Convention; and 2-6 WHEREAS, Indicative of the school's overall academic 2-7 excellence were two students who had perfect scores on the SAT and 2-8 10 others who were national merit semifinalists; and 2-9 WHEREAS, A perennial power in athletics, Kingwood's 2-10 volleyball team earned district, bi-district, and area 2-11 championships, and the school also won district titles in boys' and 2-12 girls' track and placed in the top three in the state in boys' and 2-13 girls' cross-country competition in each of the past two years; and 2-14 WHEREAS, Other team sports in which Kingwood excelled in 2-15 1999-2000 and 2000-2001 include girls' basketball, district and 2-16 bi-district champions; boys' basketball, bi-district champions; 2-17 tennis, district champions and regional quarterfinalists; girls' 2-18 golf, district and regional champions; boys' golf, state 2-19 runners-up; girls' soccer, district, region, and state champions; 2-20 boys' soccer, district, bi-district, and area champions; softball, 2-21 district, bi-district, and area champions; football, district 2-22 champions, and one player earned All-State Academic status while a 2-23 teammate was tabbed honorable mention All-State Academic; girls' 2-24 swimming and diving, district and regional champions, and their 2-25 coach was named district and regional coach of the year and 2-26 National Federation Girls' Swimming Coach of the Year; boys' 2-27 swimming and diving, district champions and regional runners-up; 3-1 and baseball, second and third place in district; and 3-2 WHEREAS, Additionally, a Kingwood lacrosse player earned 3-3 All-American status, while the team took fourth in state and placed 3-4 five players on the All-State squad; the boys' and girls' 3-5 gymnastics teams were state finalists; the cheerleading team placed 3-6 eighth in national competition; and the drill team won the national 3-7 championship; and 3-8 WHEREAS, In other competition, several of Kingwood's 3-9 Distributive Education Club students won district, and many members 3-10 also earned individual distinction; and 3-11 WHEREAS, Kingwood High School's legacy of accomplishment is 3-12 truly impressive and all those who have participated in the 3-13 school's many successes are indeed worthy of special legislative 3-14 recognition; now, therefore, be it 3-15 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas 3-16 Legislature hereby congratulate the students, faculty, and staff at 3-17 Kingwood High School for the students' many notable extracurricular 3-18 achievements and extend to all sincere best wishes for continued 3-19 success; and, be it further 3-20 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 3-21 prepared for Kingwood High School as an expression of high regard 3-22 by the Texas House of Representatives.
