R E S O L U T I O N
1-1 WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives is proud to
1-2 recognize Hutchinson County on the 100th anniversary of its
1-3 founding and to join the citizens of the county in honoring their
1-4 important contributions to our state; and
1-5 WHEREAS, Named for pioneer jurist Anderson Hutchinson, the
1-6 area that comprises the county today was traversed by Coronado and
1-7 his men in search of the Seven Cities of Cibolo in 1541; and
1-8 WHEREAS, In the 1700s, Comanche Indians drove the Apache
1-9 Indians out of the area and considered it Comanche land; in the
1-10 early 1840s, William Bent built the Bent Brothers Trading Post to
1-11 trade horses with the Comanches, and it became known as Fort Adobe;
1-12 and
1-13 WHEREAS, The first Battle of Adobe Walls took place in 1864
1-14 with Kit Carson, 200 infantry cavalrymen, and 75 Indian scouts
1-15 fighting against Douhasan Kiowa Indian Chief in the largest Plains
1-16 Indian battle ever fought in Texas; and
1-17 WHEREAS, On June 27, 1874, 28 buffalo hunters and one woman
1-18 led by Billy Dixon and Bat Masterson fought the second Battle of
1-19 Adobe Walls against 400 Southern Plains Indians led by Comanche
1-20 Chief Quanah Parker; and
1-21 WHEREAS, In August 1874, Colonel Miles skirmished with 65
1-22 troops against 100 Indians in the ruins of the Adobe Walls
1-23 stockades in the third Battle of Adobe Walls; these three battles
1-24 opened the way for the development of railroads, ranches, and farms
2-1 in Hutchinson County; and
2-2 WHEREAS, With the organization of the county in 1901, the
2-3 county seat was established at New Town at Plemons, and in 1921,
2-4 the first discovery of oil was made in the Panhandle on the 6666
2-5 Ranch; and
2-6 WHEREAS, Today, Hutchinson County has many historical sites
2-7 and markers reflecting the area's rich heritage; included among the
2-8 county's numerous attractions is the only national monument in
2-9 Texas at the Alibates Flint Quarries, which is a source of flint
2-10 that was used by the Indians; and
2-11 WHEREAS, Proud of their county's colorful history, the
2-12 residents of Hutchinson County look forward to the celebration of
2-13 the county's centennial this year; now, therefore, be it
2-14 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas
2-15 Legislature hereby commend the achievements and contributions of
2-16 the citizens of Hutchinson County on the occasion of the county's
2-17 100th anniversary.
