                                 R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives is pleased to
 1-2     recognize the city of Borger on the grand occasion of the 75th
 1-3     anniversary of its founding; and
 1-4           WHEREAS, In 1926, A. P. Borger, a real estate promoter,
 1-5     bought 240 acres in Texas with the express purpose of creating a
 1-6     town; the Texas oil boom was well under way in the mid-1920s, and
 1-7     people flocked to the new settlement, hoping to find their own
 1-8     prosperity; and
 1-9           WHEREAS, An election was called on October 28, 1926, to
1-10     incorporate the city of Borger; the town soon had its own railway
1-11     station and post office; unfortunately, it also developed many of
1-12     the problems associated with rapidly expanding urban areas; crime
1-13     escalated, while infrastructure construction and sanitation
1-14     regulations suffered; and
1-15           WHEREAS, The Great Depression brought an end to Borger's
1-16     decadent, boomtown days; residents shifted their attention from
1-17     getting rich to making civic improvements; with the help of the
1-18     Work Projects Administration, Borger's streets and buildings were
1-19     improved; and
1-20           WHEREAS, Following World War II, the city of Borger saw
1-21     several significant changes; the Hutchinson County Airport was
1-22     constructed north of town in 1949; by the 1960s Borger was one of
1-23     the largest centers for oil, carbon black, and petrochemical
1-24     production and supplies in the state; manufacturers and businesses
 2-1     entered the area, expanding the local economy and increasing
 2-2     prosperity; and
 2-3           WHEREAS, Today, after 75 years of existence, Borger remains
 2-4     an important shipping point for petroleum and agricultural products
 2-5     produced in the region; a grand place, with industrious,
 2-6     civic-minded residents, and a healthy economy, the city of Borger
 2-7     can look forward to a bright future in the new millennium; now,
 2-8     therefore, be it
 2-9           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas
2-10     Legislature hereby congratulate citizens of Borger on the 75th
2-11     anniversary of its founding and send best wishes for joyous
2-12     anniversary festivities.
