No. 449 77R8479 WMS-D R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, Shirley Ann Huffaker of Odessa passed away on 1-2 February 23, 2001, at the age of 65, and the loss of this esteemed 1-3 individual is shared by her family, friends, and community; and 1-4 WHEREAS, A Texas native, she graduated from Waco High School 1-5 and pursued her higher education at Texas Tech University, where 1-6 she attained her bachelor's degree in elementary education and 1-7 speech therapy and was voted Miss Texas Tech; and 1-8 WHEREAS, Mrs. Huffaker was a staunch believer in the value of 1-9 education and devoted 13 years to her career as a classroom 1-10 teacher; she later applied her passion for education to her 1-11 position as director of the Adult Learning Center at Odessa 1-12 College; and 1-13 WHEREAS, The owner of the Homestead Tea Room and the 1-14 Teacher's Market, she was also a gifted writer and had an original 1-15 short story published professionally; and 1-16 WHEREAS, She served her community for 12 years as the first 1-17 woman elected to the Ector County ISD school board, including two 1-18 terms as president, and was active in the political arena as a 1-19 sponsor of the Young Republicans Club and as a delegate to the 1-20 Republican National Convention; and 1-21 WHEREAS, Truly a dynamic and versatile individual, 1-22 Mrs. Huffaker was active in a variety of worthy civic and 1-23 professional organizations, and in recognition of her myriad 1-24 contributions she received numerous well-deserved awards and 2-1 accolades; and 2-2 WHEREAS, Those who shared the friendship of Mrs. Huffaker 2-3 will long miss her presence, but her remarkable spirit will live on 2-4 in the hearts of the many people whose lives she touched during her 2-5 time on this earth; now, therefore, be it 2-6 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas 2-7 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Shirley Huffaker and 2-8 extend sincere sympathy to the members of her family: to her 2-9 husband, Neal Huffaker; to her children, Mike Huffaker, Holly 2-10 Spoonemore, and Robin Lyn Huffaker; to her mother, Florance 2-11 DuPriest; to her brother, John DuPriest; to her grandchildren, 2-12 Tabatha Thoms, Toi Key, Aaron Huffaker, and Michel Huffaker; and to 2-13 the other relatives and many friends of this beloved woman; and, be 2-14 it further 2-15 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-16 prepared for the members of her family and that when the Texas 2-17 House of Representatives adjourns this day it do so in memory of 2-18 Shirley Ann Huffaker.
