R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, On March 27, 2001, many proud residents from Wood 1-2 County are gathering in Austin to celebrate Wood County Day at the 1-3 State Capitol; and 1-4 WHEREAS, Named for former Texas Governor George T. Wood, this 1-5 Northeast Texas county was established in 1850 and consists of 1-6 about 700 square miles of hilly, heavily forested terrain; and 1-7 WHEREAS, In its infancy, the county was an agricultural trade 1-8 center; through the years, it has undergone many changes and now 1-9 relies on a diverse economy that revolves around petroleum, natural 1-10 gas, agribusiness, manufacturing, and tourism; and 1-11 WHEREAS, Quitman is the county seat and home of the Governor 1-12 Hogg Shrine and State Park, a historic site with buildings, 1-13 mementos, and a museum dedicated to the Hogg family, which was 1-14 prominent in Texas history and politics; other incorporated towns 1-15 in Wood County include Winnsboro, Alba, Golden, Hawkins, Yantis, 1-16 and Mineola, which was designated a Texas Main Street City in 1989; 1-17 and 1-18 WHEREAS, The citizens of Wood County enjoy celebrating the 1-19 area's unique heritage and culture with traditional annual events 1-20 such as the Oil Festival, Alba-Golden Sweet Potato Festival, 1-21 Quitman Dogwood Fiesta, Hawkins Pancake Festival, Mineola May Days 1-22 Bean Festival, and Autumn Trails Festival; and 1-23 WHEREAS, This geographically diverse region is a prime 1-24 destination for outdoor and water enthusiasts; Lake Fork, the 2-1 county's largest lake, is known as a bass fisherman's paradise, 2-2 and the state's record largemouth bass was caught there; Lake 2-3 Winnsboro, Lake Quitman, Lake Hawkins, and Lake Holbrook are also 2-4 within the county's borders; and 2-5 WHEREAS, Recreational and high school sports are also 2-6 important in the county; the Winnsboro High School girls' 2-7 basketball team garnered the University Interscholastic League 2-8 Class 3A state championship in 1999 and 2000, and the 2001 Lady 2-9 Raiders won the team's third consecutive title on March 3; and 2-10 WHEREAS, Today, Wood County citizens are readily embracing 2-11 the myriad challenges and opportunities of the future, and it is 2-12 most appropriate to pay tribute to them at this time; now, 2-13 therefore, be it 2-14 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas 2-15 Legislature hereby recognize March 27, 2001, as Wood County Day at 2-16 the State Capitol and extend to its citizens sincere best wishes 2-17 for the future.
