R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives takes great pride 1-2 in honoring Calvin Owens for earning an Outstanding Texan Award for 1-3 his achievements in the field of entertainment from the Texas 1-4 Legislative Black Caucus; and 1-5 WHEREAS, A graduate of Houston's Phillis Wheatley High 1-6 School, where he studied under famed band director Samuel H. 1-7 Harris, Mr. Owens is a renowned musician whose skillful trumpet 1-8 playing has earned him a host of admirers the world over and has 1-9 enabled him to perform and record with many other musical greats; 1-10 and 1-11 WHEREAS, He began his musical career touring as a member of a 1-12 vaudeville review and, after returning to Houston, performed with 1-13 the orchestra at the El Dorado Ballroom in the Third Ward; in 1953, 1-14 "The Maestro" began a four-year stint as the band director for the 1-15 legendary B. B. King, playing countless shows across the land; he 1-16 then returned to Houston and remained active in the local music 1-17 scene, arranging sessions for Duke/Peacock Records and playing in a 1-18 number of bands; and 1-19 WHEREAS, He would rejoin B. B. King in 1979, and during one 1-20 of their first tours together they became the first American band 1-21 to tour the interior of Russia; after five years Mr. Owens settled 1-22 in Belgium with his wife, Sarah, and put together his own band; 1-23 since that time, he has released several albums that have showcased 1-24 his unique and arresting sound; and 2-1 WHEREAS, A gifted performer whose music is a sizzling blend 2-2 of blues and jazz, Mr. Owens has truly proven himself a fitting 2-3 recipient of an Outstanding Texan Award, and it is indeed 2-4 appropriate to honor him at this time; now, therefore, be it 2-5 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas 2-6 Legislature hereby congratulate Calvin Owens on his receipt of an 2-7 Outstanding Texan Award from the Texas Legislative Black Caucus and 2-8 extend to him sincere best wishes for continued success and 2-9 happiness; and, be it further 2-10 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-11 prepared for Mr. Owens as an expression of high regard by the Texas 2-12 House of Representatives.
