R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, The Reverend Fred C. Hoxie, Jr., of Houston has been
 1-2     chosen by the Legislative Black Caucus to receive an Outstanding
 1-3     Texan Award in recognition of his eminent public service; and
 1-4           WHEREAS, Born in Houston on May 29, 1932, Reverend Hoxie
 1-5     graduated from Prairie View A&M College in 1956 with a degree in
 1-6     architectural engineering; he served in the United States Army
 1-7     Infantry from 1956 to 1969, rising from second lieutenant to
 1-8     captain; while in the army, he honed his leadership skills through
 1-9     the advanced officers training course at Fort Benning, Georgia; and
1-10           WHEREAS, Called to the ministry, Reverend Hoxie received his
1-11     license to preach in 1973 and his certificate of ordination two
1-12     years later; he served as pastor of Friendship Baptist Church in
1-13     Huntsville from 1975 to 1978, and since 1978 he has served as
1-14     pastor of Greater Mount Lebanon Baptist Church, Inc., in the Bayou
1-15     City; in 1987 he received a doctor of laws degree from Union
1-16     Baptist Bible College and Seminary; and
1-17           WHEREAS, Reverend Hoxie has been a valued member of the
1-18     Houston Baptist Ministers Association and a respected moderator of
1-19     the Southwest Central Missionary Baptist District Association; in
1-20     1994 the Citywide Baptist Brotherhood and Women's Uplift Union
1-21     conferred on him the Pastor of the Year award; and
1-22           WHEREAS, This esteemed clergyman has long shared his time and
1-23     talents with the larger community; from 1970 to 1977 he held the
1-24     post of chief executive officer of Citizens Participation, Model
 2-1     Cities and Community Development with the City of Houston; he has
 2-2     also worked with Houston Ministers Against Crime and devoted
 2-3     countless hours to the Salvation Army Boys Club, on whose advisory
 2-4     board he has served for 25 years; and
 2-5           WHEREAS, Through his longtime dedication to the public
 2-6     welfare and his manifold good works in behalf of the community,
 2-7     Reverend Hoxie has enriched immeasurably the city of Houston, and
 2-8     it is with great pleasure indeed that we pay tribute to this
 2-9     exemplary civic leader; now, therefore, be it
2-10           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas
2-11     Legislature hereby honor the Reverend Fred C. Hoxie, Jr., on his
2-12     receipt of an Outstanding Texan Award from the Legislative Black
2-13     Caucus and commend him for his lifetime of service to others; and,
2-14     be it further
2-15           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-16     prepared for Reverend Hoxie as an expression of high regard by the
2-17     Texas House of Representatives.
