                                 R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, Ambassador Alan L. Keyes, presidential candidate,
 1-2     diplomat, author, activist, and syndicated columnist and talk-show
 1-3     host, is one of the most prominent intellectuals in American public
 1-4     life today; and
 1-5           WHEREAS, The holder of a doctorate in government affairs from
 1-6     Harvard University, Ambassador Keyes has been engaged in the public
 1-7     arena and in public service for nearly 25 years; he began his
 1-8     career with the U.S. State Department in 1978, and in 1983 he was
 1-9     named U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Economic and Social
1-10     Council; after several years at that post, he became Assistant
1-11     Secretary of State for International Organization Affairs, a
1-12     position he held from 1985 to 1988; and
1-13           WHEREAS, Since leaving government service, Ambassador Keyes
1-14     has been engaged in a far-reaching civics discussion with the
1-15     American public; his concern for restoring to prominence the  basic
1-16     principles of the union, together with a sense of individual civic
1-17     responsibility, has found expression in political campaigns, print
1-18     and broadcast journalism, books, and grassroots activism; and
1-19           WHEREAS, Well known across the country for his 1996 and 2000
1-20     presidential candidacies, Ambassador Keyes was also the Republican
1-21     nominee for U.S. senator from Maryland in 1988 and 1992; a former
1-22     president of Citizens Against Government Waste, Ambassador Keyes
1-23     founded the National Taxpayer Action Day in 1990 and the
1-24     Declaration Foundation in 1996; he presently chairs the Declaration
 2-1     Foundation, an organization dedicated to the principles of the
 2-2     Declaration of Independence; and
 2-3           WHEREAS, Ambassador Keyes is recognized across the political
 2-4     spectrum as a dynamic, articulate, erudite, and impassioned
 2-5     advocate for freedom and civic engagement, and he is to be
 2-6     commended for his distinguished public service and his unreserved
 2-7     commitment to the core values of this democracy; now, therefore, be
 2-8     it
 2-9           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas
2-10     Legislature hereby honor Ambassador Alan L. Keyes for his eminent
2-11     contributions to American public life and extend to him sincere
2-12     best wishes on behalf of the people of Texas; and, be it further
2-13           RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be prepared for
2-14     Ambassador Keyes as an expression of high regard by the Texas House
2-15     of Representatives.
