R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, On March 28, 2001, many proud residents from Hays 1-2 County are gathering in Austin to celebrate Hays County Day at the 1-3 State Capitol; and 1-4 WHEREAS, Created in 1848 from part of Travis County, Hays 1-5 County is named for renowned Texas Ranger Jack Hays; the county is 1-6 located on the border between the Edwards Plateau and the southern 1-7 Black Prairie region; and 1-8 WHEREAS, In its infancy, Hays County reaped the benefits of 1-9 its fertile terrain to help the area prosper; throughout the years, 1-10 the county has continued to flourish and now relies on a diverse 1-11 economy that revolves around education, manufacturing, and tourism; 1-12 and 1-13 WHEREAS, San Marcos serves as the county seat and has many 1-14 notable attractions, such as the Belvin Street Historic District, 1-15 Aquarena Center, the San Marcos River and the River Walkway, and 1-16 the nation's only earthquake-formed cave, and the city's quaint 1-17 downtown area is on the prestigious National Register of Historic 1-18 Places; and 1-19 WHEREAS, Other towns in the county, which offer such uniquely 1-20 Texas highlights as "junk-tiquing," wiener-dog races, and Market 1-21 Days shopping, include Bear Creek, Buda, Driftwood, Dripping 1-22 Springs, Hays, Kyle, Mountain City, Niederwald, Uhland, Wimberley, 1-23 and Woodcreek, and the county is also the home of the Salt Lick 1-24 barbeque restaurant and spectacular Devil's Backbone scenery; and 2-1 WHEREAS, Southwest Texas State University is also in Hays 2-2 County; the school, which is the alma mater of President Lyndon 2-3 Baines Johnson, observed its centennial in 1999 and was chosen as 2-4 one of the top 25 "best buys" among public universities for 2-5 in-state students in 1997-1998 by Money magazine; and 2-6 WHEREAS, Hays County's citizens are readily embracing the 2-7 myriad challenges and opportunities of the future while celebrating 2-8 their colorful history and rich culture; they have made important 2-9 contributions to the Lone Star State, and it is most appropriate to 2-10 pay tribute to them at this time; now, therefore, be it 2-11 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas 2-12 Legislature hereby recognize March 28, 2001, as Hays County Day at 2-13 the State Capitol and extend sincere best wishes to the delegation 2-14 here today for an enjoyable and memorable visit.
