                                 R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, May 17-20, 2001, marks the 50th reunion Golden
 1-2     Jubilee celebration of the Phillis Wheatley High School Class of
 1-3     1951; and
 1-4           WHEREAS, Located in Houston's Fifth Ward, this outstanding
 1-5     school opened in 1927 and was named for poet Phillis Wheatley, the
 1-6     first African American and the second American woman to publish a
 1-7     volume of poetry in America; its Class of 1951 holds the singular
 1-8     distinction of being the first graduating class of Phillis Wheatley
 1-9     High School after the original Wheatley separated into junior and
1-10     senior high schools and the high school relocated to 4900 Market
1-11     Street; and
1-12           WHEREAS, The school's many noteworthy graduates have had a
1-13     profound impact on the business, arts, and education of this state
1-14     and have made far-reaching contributions as leaders in their
1-15     churches; the Class of 1951 counts among its members numerous
1-16     community leaders who have achieved great personal and professional
1-17     success and have used their considerable skills and expertise to
1-18     the great benefit of countless people; and
1-19           WHEREAS, The Golden Jubilee on May 17-20, 2001, provides
1-20     members of the Phillis Wheatley High School Class of 1951 with a
1-21     wonderful opportunity to renew old acquaintances and share
1-22     cherished memories, and it is most appropriate that this festive
1-23     occasion be recognized at this time; now, therefore, be it
1-24           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas
 2-1     Legislature hereby commemorate the 50th reunion celebration of the
 2-2     Phillis Wheatley High School Class of 1951 and extend to its
 2-3     members sincere best wishes for a memorable observance.
