R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., was founded at 1-2 Howard University in Washington, D.C., in 1908, and this Greek 1-3 letter organization is the first sorority established by 1-4 African-American college women; and 1-5 WHEREAS, this sorority is an international organization with 1-6 approximately 200,000 members in 844 chapters extending across the 1-7 United States, the Bahamas, Bermuda, Great Britain, Germany, Korea, 1-8 and the Virgin Islands; 47 of these chapters are located in 1-9 communities and on college and university campuses in the State of 1-10 Texas; and 1-11 WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., is committed to 1-12 community service and has made numerous contributions to the 1-13 educational, civic, and social life of Texas citizens; and 1-14 WHEREAS, Shirley Fisher, an outstanding Texan, is the South 1-15 Central Regional Director of this great sisterhood and leads 1-16 members of the sorority in Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, and New 1-17 Mexico in the implementation of the current international program, 1-18 "Blazing New Trails! The Alpha Kappa Alpha National Program 1-19 Targeting Education, Health, Family, Economics, and Arts"; and 1-20 WHEREAS, members in the State of Texas contribute thousands 1-21 of volunteer hours implementing service programs in their 1-22 respective communities; now, therefore, be it 1-23 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas 2-1 Legislature hereby recognize the commitment of Shirley Fisher and 2-2 the members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., to community 2-3 service and express special appreciation for their service in the 2-4 State of Texas; and, be it further 2-5 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-6 prepared for Mrs. Shirley Fisher as an expression of high regard by 2-7 the Texas House of Representatives.
