                                 R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, Many public-spirited citizens of Seagoville are
 1-2     visiting the State Capitol on March 21, 2001, to celebrate the
 1-3     history of this North Texas community and the contributions its
 1-4     residents are making to the Lone Star State; and
 1-5           WHEREAS, The first recorded settlers in the Seagoville area
 1-6     arrived in the 1860s, drawn by the fertile soil of the Blackland
 1-7     Prairie, and by 1867 enough families lived here to justify the
 1-8     construction of a one-room log schoolhouse; in 1876 T. K. Seago,
 1-9     the town's namesake, built a general store that became the nucleus
1-10     of the growing community; and
1-11           WHEREAS, After the arrival of the Texas Trunk Railroad in
1-12     1881, Seagoville became a shipping center for cotton and alfalfa;
1-13     the steadily expanding town acquired a newspaper in 1902 and in
1-14     1914 a new movie theater; in 1926, city voters elected to
1-15     incorporate; and
1-16           WHEREAS, During World War II more than a third of
1-17     Seagoville's residents served in the armed forces; the Marine Corps
1-18     recruiting office named Seagoville "Small Town U.S.A." in 1971 and
1-19     later shot a recruiting film in its downtown district; and
1-20           WHEREAS, With the close proximity of the Dallas-Fort Worth
1-21     metroplex, Seagoville residents enjoy the best of both rural and
1-22     urban life; local schools are part of the Dallas Independent School
1-23     District, and two campuses of the Dallas Community College District
1-24     are located nearby; and
 2-1           WHEREAS, Opportunities for outdoor recreation abound at the
 2-2     city's parks and sports facilities, at the 500-acre DISD
 2-3     Environmental Learning Center and adjacent Post Oak Preserve, and
 2-4     at Lakes Ray Hubbard, Tawakoni, and Cedar Creek; each October,
 2-5     Seagofest, a popular community celebration, marks the migration of
 2-6     the beautiful monarch butterfly; and
 2-7           WHEREAS, With well over a hundred years of steady development
 2-8     behind them, the residents of this productive town are looking
 2-9     forward to meeting the opportunities and challenges of the century
2-10     now dawning, and it is a pleasure to pay tribute to their civic
2-11     spirit and to the fine community they represent; now, therefore, be
2-12     it
2-13           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas
2-14     Legislature hereby recognize March 21, 2001, as Seagoville Day at
2-15     the State Capitol and extend to this delegation sincere best wishes
2-16     for continued success in the years ahead.
