                                 R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, The passing of former police officer Gabriel D.
 1-2     Macias of Gun Barrel City on January 6, 2001, at the age of 76,
 1-3     brought a profound sense of loss to the family and many friends of
 1-4     this highly respected gentleman; and
 1-5           WHEREAS, Born in Dallas on April 17, 1924, Mr. Macias became
 1-6     one of the first Hispanic officers in the Dallas Police Department;
 1-7     he served in Europe during World War II and later, as a member of
 1-8     the Marine Corps Reserve, was called to active duty in Korea; and
 1-9           WHEREAS, After completing his military service, Mr. Macias
1-10     embarked on a distinguished career in law enforcement, and he was a
1-11     model officer who dutifully upheld the time-honored oath of
1-12     protecting and serving the people of Texas until retiring in 1978;
1-13     and
1-14           WHEREAS, Mr. Macias was also actively involved in the Coast
1-15     Guard Reserve and over a period of more than 20 years traveled to
1-16     Houston once a month to inspect ships; and
1-17           WHEREAS, Following his retirement from the Dallas Police
1-18     Department, Mr. Macias and his wife moved to Gun Barrel City; he
1-19     was a parishioner of St. Jude Catholic Church, where he made a
1-20     unique contribution playing harmonica at Spanish Mass; and
1-21           WHEREAS, With his leadership, diligence, and courage,
1-22     Mr. Macias earned a special place in the hearts of countless
1-23     people; and, although he is deeply missed, his bright spirit
1-24     continues to live on in all those whose lives he touched; now,
 2-1     therefore, be it
 2-2           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas
 2-3     Legislature hereby honor the memory of Gabriel D. Macias and extend
 2-4     sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife, Mary
 2-5     Lou Macias; to his son and daughter, Gabriel J. Macias and Irma M.
 2-6     Anguiano; to his sister, Rosa DeLaTorre; to his six grandchildren
 2-7     and six great-grandchildren; and to his other friends and
 2-8     relatives; and, be it further
 2-9           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-10     prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
2-11     Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Gabriel D.
2-12     Macias.
