                                 R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, The State of Texas lost a distinguished native son
 1-2     with the passing of the Honorable D. Roy Harrington on March 8,
 1-3     2001, at the age of 94; and
 1-4           WHEREAS, This lifelong resident of Port Arthur began his
 1-5     political career in 1956 when he was elected as a state
 1-6     representative; serving his constituents with dedication and
 1-7     integrity, he earned three consecutive terms in the Texas House of
 1-8     Representatives before being elected to the Senate in 1962; and
 1-9           WHEREAS, Representing residents in District 4, which included
1-10     Orange and Jefferson counties, Senator Harrington demonstrated the
1-11     foresight and vision essential for success in state government;
1-12     during his nine terms in that office, he authored numerous
1-13     successful bills and was instrumental in a host of civic-minded
1-14     initiatives, such as safeguarding the environmental sanctity of
1-15     Dick Dowling Park in Sabine Pass and Sea Rim State Park and the
1-16     park's adjoining beach area in southern Jefferson County; and
1-17           WHEREAS, His natural leadership ability garnered the respect
1-18     and admiration of his colleagues and allowed him an esteemed
1-19     position within the legislature; during his noteworthy career,
1-20     Senator Harrington was elected as president pro tempore and acting
1-21     governor of Texas and was a delegate to the 1974 Constitutional
1-22     Convention; and
1-23           WHEREAS, Throughout his service to the Lone Star State,
1-24     Senator Harrington acted with unfailing wisdom, graciousness, and
 2-1     commitment to the betterment of his fellow citizens, and although
 2-2     his presence will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate to
 2-3     have known him, the spirit of this exceptional Texan will surely
 2-4     live on in his tremendous civic contributions; now, therefore, be
 2-5     it
 2-6           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas
 2-7     Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of the Honorable D. Roy
 2-8     Harrington and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his
 2-9     family: to his son, Doug Harrington, Sr.; to his daughter, Karol
2-10     Hathaway; and to the many other friends, relatives, and colleagues
2-11     of this beloved gentleman; and, be it further
2-12           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-13     prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas
2-14     House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of
2-15     Senator D. Roy Harrington.
