R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, Casis Elementary School in Austin marks its 50th 1-2 anniversary in 2001, and its half-century of providing an 1-3 outstanding education to young Texans indeed merits legislative 1-4 recognition; and 1-5 WHEREAS, This outstanding school was established through a 1-6 joint venture of the Austin Public Schools and The University of 1-7 Texas at Austin; named in honor of noteworthy educators Josephine 1-8 Casis and Lilia Casis, the 20-room school initially opened its 1-9 doors to 650 students and 36 university-trained educators on 1-10 January 29, 1951; and 1-11 WHEREAS, In the ensuing 50 years, Casis has been recognized 1-12 as one of the Lone Star State's top performing schools; it has 1-13 earned "exemplary" status from the Texas Education Agency each year 1-14 since 1997, and since 1999 has been named a Texas Mentor School by 1-15 the State of Texas; and 1-16 WHEREAS, In honor of the school's golden anniversary, a 1-17 celebration is being held on March 30, 2001, with the theme 1-18 "Celebrating Excellence Through the Decades"; and 1-19 WHEREAS, This festive occasion will feature a number of 1-20 special events, including an address by Texas Governor Rick Perry, 1-21 a student program, and an open house; moreover, the "Continuing 1-22 Path of Excellence--Above and Beyond for Our Children" project was 1-23 created specifically to commemorate the 50th anniversary milestone 1-24 with the creation of the Path of Excellence walkway; and 2-1 WHEREAS, For 50 years, Casis Elementary School has been 2-2 invaluable to the education and well-being of countless 2-3 individuals, and it is truly appropriate to pay tribute to this 2-4 fine school at this time; now, therefore, be it 2-5 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas 2-6 Legislature hereby commemorate the 50th anniversary of Casis 2-7 Elementary School and extend to its faculty, staff, and students 2-8 sincere best wishes for a memorable observance.
