No. 647 77R11246 MJS-D R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The passing of Patricia Lee Clayworth of San Antonio 1-2 on March 20, 2001, at the age of 58, has brought a profound sense 1-3 of loss to the family and friends of this esteemed woman; and 1-4 WHEREAS, Born on March 23, 1942, Ms. Clayworth began teaching 1-5 in the San Antonio Independent School District in 1969; throughout 1-6 her distinguished career, she was known for her innovative methods 1-7 of reaching her students and helping young people achieve success 1-8 not only in the classroom, but also in life; and 1-9 WHEREAS, While working at Mark Twain Middle School, this 1-10 outstanding teacher helped to develop the Frog Pond program, which 1-11 strived to make a difference in the lives of middle school students 1-12 who were considered at risk to drop out; by the end of the 1-13 program's first year, seven of its members were eligible for 1-14 National Honor Society membership; and 1-15 WHEREAS, A passionate advocate for students and public 1-16 education, Ms. Clayworth had a positive impact in other ways; she 1-17 served as president of the San Antonio Teachers Council and was 1-18 vice president of the San Antonio Federation of Teachers; and 1-19 WHEREAS, Her influence also was felt in the political sphere, 1-20 where her expertise of operating phone banks made Ms. Clayworth a 1-21 great asset on many campaigns; she played an integral role in Henry 1-22 Cisneros becoming the mayor of San Antonio in 1981; other political 1-23 figures she lent assistance to included state senators, state 1-24 representatives, U.S. congressmen, and a number of school board 2-1 members and city officials; and 2-2 WHEREAS, Widely respected and admired for her sense of 2-3 purpose, high expectations, and deep commitment to fairness and 2-4 justice, Ms. Clayworth used her abilities and considerable talents 2-5 to benefit the state's most valuable and fragile resource--its 2-6 children; although she will be deeply missed, her bright spirit and 2-7 indelible legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of all 2-8 those whose lives she enriched; now, therefore, be it 2-9 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas 2-10 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Patricia Lee 2-11 Clayworth and extend sincere sympathy to the members of her family: 2-12 to her mother, Velma Clayworth; to her brother, Gerald Clayworth 2-13 and his wife, Emma; to her nephews, Gerald Clayworth, Jr., and 2-14 Frank Clayworth; to her niece, Sherri Wiebush; and to her many 2-15 other relatives, friends, and colleagues; and, be it further 2-16 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-17 prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of 2-18 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Patricia 2-19 Lee Clayworth.
