                                 R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, Samuel Bernabe of the Rio Grande Valley has been
 1-2     named the 2001 Migrant Student of the Year by The University of
 1-3     Texas Migrant Alumni Selection Committee, and this noteworthy
 1-4     achievement truly merits special recognition; and
 1-5           WHEREAS, The University of Texas has sponsored a distance
 1-6     learning program for migrant high school students since 1986,
 1-7     providing support services such as tutors, bilingual materials, and
 1-8     interstate coordination for students who leave their Texas schools
 1-9     before the end of one school year and return well after the next
1-10     year starts; the young men and women who participate in this
1-11     program demonstrate tremendous discipline, as they may miss several
1-12     weeks of instruction each year and are faced with frequently
1-13     changing schools, yet often continue to excel scholastically; and
1-14           WHEREAS, A senior at McAllen Memorial High School with a 3.8
1-15     grade-point average and extensive extracurricular involvements,
1-16     Mr. Bernabe was selected as the recipient of this award from more
1-17     than 1,000 of his migrant peers; he is a member of the National
1-18     Honor Society, the treasurer of the Art Club, and president of the
1-19     Migrant Club, and he generously gives of his time to tutor his
1-20     fellow students; and
1-21           WHEREAS, He began working in the fields of Idaho at the age
1-22     of 14, harvesting sugar beets, onions, and corn to help support his
1-23     family; encouraged by his parents, he put forth the extraordinary
1-24     effort and commitment necessary to excel at school and has made an
 2-1     impressive start toward his goal of becoming a doctor; and
 2-2           WHEREAS, Samuel Bernabe is a young man of integrity and
 2-3     staunch dedication, whose significant accomplishments are most
 2-4     admirable, and it is indeed appropriate to take this opportunity to
 2-5     honor him; now, therefore, be it
 2-6           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas
 2-7     Legislature hereby congratulate Samuel Bernabe for being selected
 2-8     as the 2001 Migrant Student of the Year and extend to him sincere
 2-9     best wishes for continued success in all of his future endeavors;
2-10     and, be it further
2-11           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-12     prepared for Mr. Bernabe as an expression of high regard by the
2-13     Texas House of Representatives.
