                                 R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, Approximately four million Texas citizens ride
 1-2     bicycles for recreation, transportation, and fitness and spend more
 1-3     than $100 million on bicycle-related goods and services; and
 1-4           WHEREAS, Bicycle rallies and tours throughout our state have
 1-5     had a positive economic impact on many communities and helped raise
 1-6     money for charities; and
 1-7           WHEREAS, Amateur, professional, and world-champion cyclists
 1-8     race and train in Texas, bringing national media attention and
 1-9     recognition to our state, and Texas is home to well-known cyclist
1-10     and Plano native Lance Armstrong, who is a two-time Olympian and
1-11     has won the prestigious Tour de France twice; the Lance Armstrong
1-12     Foundation's Ride for the Roses is held annually in Austin and is
1-13     one of the most popular and significant events in the world of
1-14     cycling; and
1-15           WHEREAS, The Texas Bicycle Coalition was organized in 1991 to
1-16     promote the advancement of bicycling access, safety, and education
1-17     in the Lone Star State; and
1-18           WHEREAS, The Texas Department of Transportation has awarded
1-19     the Texas Bicycle Coalition Education Fund a grant for the Texas
1-20     SuperCyclist Project in which 3,600 physical education and health
1-21     teachers will be trained in the state bicycle safety curriculum
1-22     developed by the Texas Department of Public Safety; and
1-23           WHEREAS, The members and volunteers of the Texas Bicycle
1-24     Coalition have made valuable contributions in making our state
 2-1     safer for bicycle enthusiasts while striving to spread the
 2-2     organization's message to countless people, and it is most
 2-3     appropriate to honor them at this time; now, therefore, be it
 2-4           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas
 2-5     Legislature hereby commend the work of the founders of the Texas
 2-6     Bicycle Coalition, its board of directors, and its volunteers and
 2-7     recognize April 9, 2001, as Texas Bicycle Day at the State Capitol;
 2-8     and, be it further
 2-9           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-10     prepared for the members of the Texas Bicycle Coalition as an
2-11     expression of best wishes by the Texas House of Representatives.
