R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, The 2001 Mexia High School basketball team captured
 1-2     a convincing 74-49 victory against Corpus Christi West Oso High
 1-3     School to win the UIL Class 3A boys' state championship, and this
 1-4     outstanding team accomplishment merits special legislative
 1-5     recognition; and
 1-6           WHEREAS, Head Coach Darrell Collins and assistant coaches
 1-7     Monte Huggins, Shane Adair, and Brad Gibson guided Mexia to the
 1-8     District 19-3A title and a 33-2 overall record this season, tying
 1-9     the school record for most wins in a single season; in addition,
1-10     the coaching staff had the Blackcats ably prepared for their title
1-11     showdown against a resilient Corpus Christi West Oso team; and
1-12           WHEREAS, In the state tournament held at the Frank Erwin
1-13     Center on the campus of The University of Texas at Austin, the
1-14     Blackcats relied on their stifling defense, limiting the Bears to
1-15     29.5 percent shooting from the floor; the Blackcats' prolific
1-16     offense was sparked by tournament Most Valuable Player Jesse
1-17     Kimbrough, who finished the game with 22 points, 14 rebounds, 5
1-18     steals, 4 assists, and 3 blocked shots; joining him on the
1-19     all-tournament team were teammates John McGilvray and Rickey
1-20     Huckaby; and
1-21           WHEREAS, The state title also capped a remarkable run for the
1-22     team's nine seniors, who compiled an impressive 120 wins during
1-23     their outstanding high school careers and also helped the Blackcats
1-24     win a state title in 1999; and
 2-1           WHEREAS, The superb season would not have been possible
 2-2     without the contributions from all of the talented team members,
 2-3     including Marvin Childs, Rickey Huckaby, Sam Chambers, Jesse
 2-4     Kimbrough, Willie Jefferson, Greg Dunn, Freddie Hall, Anthony
 2-5     Johnson, Donavan Smith, John McGilvray, Tony Brooks, Brian Jones,
 2-6     Herman White, Jr., William Henderson, and LaVodges Greer;
 2-7     additional support came from team managers Brandon Dansby and Roger
 2-8     McNeel, bookkeeper David Aguilar, statistician Terry Arnold,
 2-9     Athletic Director Craig Harris, Principal Pam Kreuzburg, and
2-10     Superintendent Larry Devitt; and
2-11           WHEREAS, Through hard work, discipline, and training, the
2-12     Mexia coaches and players came together to meet their collective
2-13     goal; the Blackcats' state triumph is a reflection of their
2-14     commitment and competitive spirit, and it is an appropriate
2-15     culmination to an exceptional season; now, therefore, be it
2-16           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas
2-17     Legislature hereby congratulate the 2001 Mexia High School
2-18     basketball team on winning the UIL Class 3A boys' state
2-19     championship and extend to its members, coaches, and supporters
2-20     sincere best wishes for continued success and good fortune; and, be
2-21     it further
2-22           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-23     prepared for the Mexia High School basketball team as a token of
2-24     high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
