                                 R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, Since 1959, the LULAC Feria de las Flores has raised
 1-2     scholarship money for deserving college-bound students, and this
 1-3     year marks the 42nd anniversary of this beloved annual pageant; and
 1-4           WHEREAS, Created and organized by Joe Flores, the feria has
 1-5     been sponsored by LULAC Council No. 1 since the inaugural event in
 1-6     1959, when Abby Pina was crowned as the first Feria de las Flores
 1-7     Queen; and
 1-8           WHEREAS, Contestants are judged in six categories:  beauty,
 1-9     personality, poise, costume, dance routine, and on-stage question,
1-10     and the event, which is designed to pay tribute to the heritage of
1-11     Mexican American citizens, features music, dance, and dress that
1-12     typify various regions south of the border; and
1-13           WHEREAS, The talented individuals participating in this
1-14     year's competition are Jessica Ramirez, Kimberly Nicole Guerra,
1-15     Kayla A. Garza, Amy Guerrero, Martha Elena Nuncio, Melissa Nicole
1-16     Diaz, Raina D. Ybarra, Melinda Lopez, Erin Hunter, Amanda Marie
1-17     Amaro, Marlo Casarez, Raven Martinez, Joann De La Rosa, and
1-18     Bernadette Galvan; and
1-19           WHEREAS, Through the generous support of the South Texas
1-20     business community, LULAC Council No. 1 has distributed more than
1-21     $900,000 in scholarship funds to date, and this display of
1-22     community spirit and dedication to providing educational
1-23     opportunities for the young people of South Texas is truly worthy
1-24     of special legislative recognition; now, therefore, be it
 2-1           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas
 2-2     Legislature hereby commemorate the 42nd anniversary of the Feria de
 2-3     las Flores and commend the members of LULAC Council No. 1 for their
 2-4     significant efforts in this regard; and, be it further
 2-5           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
 2-6     prepared for LULAC Council No. 1 as an expression of high regard by
 2-7     the Texas House of Representatives.
