R E S O L U T I O N
1-1 WHEREAS, The Mansfield High School Lady Tigers captured the
1-2 2001 UIL Class 5A girls basketball state title with a 62-49 win
1-3 against the Spring Westfield High School Mustangs, and this
1-4 outstanding team accomplishment is indeed deserving of special
1-5 recognition; and
1-6 WHEREAS, Head coach Samantha Morrow and assistants Jason
1-7 Mutterer, Julie Lowery, and Dawn Mailloux guided the Lady Tigers to
1-8 a 36-1 overall record this season and helped them become only the
1-9 second school in Class 5A to ever win three consecutive state
1-10 championships; and
1-11 WHEREAS, In the state tournament held at the Frank Erwin
1-12 Center on the campus of The University of Texas at Austin, the Lady
1-13 Tigers were led by Erin Grant, who scored 12 points and grabbed
1-14 nine rebounds in the championship game and was selected as the
1-15 tournament's Most Valuable Player; joining her on the
1-16 all-tournament team were teammates Brie Madden, Brie Southall, and
1-17 Tori Wilson; and
1-18 WHEREAS, The state triumph completes a three-season run
1-19 during which the Lady Tigers have compiled an impressive 110
1-20 victories while suffering only three defeats; moreover, Mansfield
1-21 finished the season ranked No. 5 in the prestigious USA TODAY Super
1-22 25 girls basketball rankings and No. 1 in the Rival.com national
1-23 poll and the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches 5A Poll; and
1-24 WHEREAS, This year's superb season could not have been
2-1 possible without the contributions of all the team members,
2-2 including April O'Neal, Ashley Purgeson, Erin Grant, Camie Ford,
2-3 Clair Sundquist, Lauren Fletcher, Brie Southall, Joslyn Greenard,
2-4 Kelsie Edwards, Amber Bell, Brie Madden, and Tori Wilson;
2-5 additional support came from team managers Jessica Barnes, Dafne
2-6 Espinoza, and Jasmine Talton; athletic trainers Andy Starnes and
2-7 Eric White; athletic director Debbie Weems; Superintendent Vernon
2-8 Newsom; and Principal Jerry Kirby; and
2-9 WHEREAS, With persistence, hard work, and discipline, the
2-10 Mansfield players and coaches came together to meet their
2-11 collective goal; these admirable young women have proven themselves
2-12 to be formidable competitors, and the Lady Tigers may take great
2-13 pride in their state championship; now, therefore, be it
2-14 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas
2-15 Legislature hereby honor the Mansfield High School Lady Tigers for
2-16 winning the 2001 UIL Class 5A girls basketball state championship
2-17 and extend to the players, coaches, and supporters sincere best
2-18 wishes for continued success and happiness; and, be it further
2-19 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-20 prepared for the members of the Mansfield High School girls
2-21 basketball team as an expression of high regard by the Texas House
2-22 of Representatives.
