R E S O L U T I O N
1-1 WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives is proud to honor
1-2 one of baseball's true legends by celebrating the lifetime
1-3 achievements of Henry L. "Hank" Aaron; and
1-4 WHEREAS, Known for his ferocious swing that helped him
1-5 acquire the universal moniker "Hammerin' Hank," this remarkable
1-6 athlete etched a permanent place in Major League Baseball's storied
1-7 history when he belted his 715th home run to shatter George Herman
1-8 "Babe" Ruth's home run record on April 8, 1974; Mr. Aaron finished
1-9 his illustrious 23-year career with an astounding 755 home runs and
1-10 remains baseball's all-time home run king; and
1-11 WHEREAS, Selected as one of ESPN's top 100 North American
1-12 athletes of the 20th century, Mr. Aaron holds numerous records and
1-13 ranks as the game's all-time leader in RBIs, total bases, and
1-14 extra-base hits and is second in at-bats and runs scored; in
1-15 addition, he hit 40 or more home runs eight times, played in 24
1-16 All-Star Games, was chosen as the National League's Most Valuable
1-17 Player in 1957, and became the first player ever to record the
1-18 unique milestone of 3,000 hits and 500 home runs; and
1-19 WHEREAS, A member of the Milwaukee and Atlanta Braves and
1-20 later the Milwaukee Brewers, Mr. Aaron was one of the game's most
1-21 feared sluggers and best all-around players; his prodigious
1-22 accomplishments led to his induction into the National Baseball
1-23 Hall of Fame in Cooperstown in 1982; and
1-24 WHEREAS, Since retiring from baseball in 1976, he has stayed
2-1 close to the game and has held several important positions with the
2-2 Atlanta Braves organization, such as vice president of player
2-3 development and senior vice president and assistant to the
2-4 president; moreover, Mr. Aaron has worked for Turner Broadcasting
2-5 as a corporate vice president of community relations and as a
2-6 member of the network's board of directors, and he has also served
2-7 as vice president of business development for The Airport Network;
2-8 and
2-9 WHEREAS, A native of Mobile, Alabama, Mr. Aaron is a leader
2-10 off the field as well and is involved in many civic and
2-11 philanthropic activities; he has generously donated his time and
2-12 considerable talents to Big Brothers and Big Sisters organizations,
2-13 and his Hank Aaron Rookie League has given many young people in
2-14 Atlanta an opportunity and outlet to play baseball; and
2-15 WHEREAS, Whether it be on the field or in the community, this
2-16 esteemed gentleman's talent, integrity, and immense character have
2-17 earned him the respect and admiration of legions of players,
2-18 coaches, and fans worldwide, and it is indeed a privilege to pay
2-19 tribute to him at this time; now, therefore, be it
2-20 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas
2-21 Legislature hereby honor the outstanding career and immeasurable
2-22 contributions of Henry L. "Hank" Aaron and extend to him sincere
2-23 best wishes for continued success and good fortune; and, be it
2-24 further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-25 prepared for Mr. Aaron as an expression of high regard by the Texas
2-26 House of Representatives.
