R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, August 24-26, 2001, Phillis Wheatley High School's 1-2 Class of 1951 will gather in San Antonio to celebrate their 50th 1-3 reunion, and this noteworthy occasion is truly deserving of special 1-4 recognition; and 1-5 WHEREAS, "School Days are Over and Our Lives Unfold, We're 1-6 Getting Together to Share Our Gold" is the theme of this year's 1-7 reunion; activities scheduled during this memorable weekend include 1-8 a "get acquainted" event at the Barbara Jordan Center on Friday, a 1-9 dinner and dance at the Fort Sam Houston NCO Club on Saturday, and 1-10 a service at Zion Star Baptist Church on Sunday, followed by a 1-11 get-together at the home of John and Doris Rucker in Seguin; and 1-12 WHEREAS, Named after the 18th-century African-born American 1-13 poet, Phillis Wheatley High School opened its doors in 1933 and 1-14 provided for the educational needs of students for nearly four 1-15 decades until its closing in 1970; today it serves the San Antonio 1-16 community as a middle school; and 1-17 WHEREAS, An undertaking of the size of this reunion would be 1-18 impossible without the commitment and dedication of many talented 1-19 individuals, and credit for the event's success must go to the 1-20 class reunion planning committee members Mable Bailey, John and 1-21 Alta Hartfield, Doris Rucker, Johneva Toliver, Christine Ward, 1-22 Jerlone Gaitwood, Mary Francis, Lillian Moore, Val Grace Duncan, 1-23 and Alene Horton; and 1-24 WHEREAS, Through the years following their high school 2-1 graduation, the men and women of the Class of 1951 have assumed 2-2 leadership roles in San Antonio and throughout the nation, and it 2-3 is indeed fitting at this time to recognize both the breadth of 2-4 their accomplishments and their moving loyalty to their school; 2-5 now, therefore, be it 2-6 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas 2-7 Legislature hereby commemorate the 50th anniversary of Phillis 2-8 Wheatley High School's Class of 1951 and extend to its members 2-9 sincere best wishes for the future.
