R E S O L U T I O N
1-1 WHEREAS, William Ingram Smith is a member of the proud and
1-2 valiant group of people who served in the United States Armed
1-3 Forces during World War II, and his personal sacrifices and
1-4 dedication to his country are indeed deserving of special
1-5 legislative recognition; and
1-6 WHEREAS, This exemplary gentleman served with distinction as
1-7 a machinist mate aboard the USS Kadyshan Bay in the United States
1-8 Navy and saw action in most of the major battles that took place in
1-9 the Pacific, including Okinawa and Leyte Gulf; his ship also
1-10 escorted the USS Indianapolis so that vital cargo could be
1-11 delivered to its Pacific destination; and
1-12 WHEREAS, At the end of the war, Mr. Smith's vessel was in
1-13 Tokyo Bay moored next to the USS Missouri, and he witnessed a
1-14 historical moment as he and many other Allied Forces troops
1-15 celebrated the signing of the Japanese surrender; he also was a
1-16 participant in the Magic Carpet Fleet, which transported many of
1-17 our nation's men and women back home from the war; and
1-18 WHEREAS, After completing his meritorious naval service, he
1-19 returned to his native Texas and has lived and worked on a farm
1-20 near Goodlet that has been in his family since 1925; and
1-21 WHEREAS, A devoted husband who has been married for more than
1-22 five decades to his wife, Genevieve, this intrepid gentleman has
1-23 nobly demonstrated his love of this country, and his valuable
1-24 contributions have helped Americans enjoy the freedoms and
2-1 liberties that we hold so dear, and it is most appropriate to pay
2-2 tribute to him at this time; now, therefore, be it
2-3 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas
2-4 Legislature hereby commend William Ingram Smith on his myriad
2-5 accomplishments and exemplary record of service and extend to him
2-6 sincere best wishes for success and happiness in his future
2-7 endeavors; and, be it further
2-8 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-9 prepared for Mr. Smith as an expression of high regard by the Texas
2-10 House of Representatives.
