No. 800 77R13215 MW-D R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, On April 25, 2001, the Youth Achievement program in 1-2 Garland, led by administrator Joe Walker, is hosting an awards 1-3 ceremony for its students and tutors, and it is indeed fitting to 1-4 take this opportunity to recognize this outstanding organization; 1-5 and 1-6 WHEREAS, Founded in San Antonio in 1995, Youth Achievement 1-7 was modeled after the Midtown Educational Foundation of Chicago; it 1-8 targets moderate-risk children before they give up on themselves, 1-9 offering them character-building and tutorial programs; and 1-10 WHEREAS, Garland's Youth Achievement began its sessions in 1-11 March 2000 at Williams Elementary School with 11 students in 1-12 attendance; now over 30 young people benefit from the counsel and 1-13 instruction of its dedicated volunteer mentors; and 1-14 WHEREAS, Encouraged by its success, Youth Achievement, with 1-15 the assistance of Garland Independent School District (ISD), plans 1-16 to add a middle school and another elementary school to its roster 1-17 next fall with the goal of providing support for students through 1-18 high school graduation; and 1-19 WHEREAS, The Youth Achievement program in Garland is a 1-20 shining example of what can be accomplished when exceptional people 1-21 volunteer to help children in the community reach their potential; 1-22 now, therefore, be it 1-23 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas 1-24 Legislature hereby commend the tutors, their students, the Garland 2-1 ISD, and all those who contribute to the success of Youth 2-2 Achievement and extend to them sincere best wishes for continued 2-3 success in all their future endeavors; and, be it further 2-4 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-5 prepared for Youth Achievement in Garland as an expression of high 2-6 regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
