No. 806 77R13549 GMW-D R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, For 37 years, Community Action Agencies have been 1-2 promoting and ensuring self-sufficiency for those with a limited 1-3 income; and 1-4 WHEREAS, Created by the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964, 1-5 Community Action Agencies have made invaluable contributions to 1-6 individuals and families in Texas and across the nation by 1-7 providing them innovative and cost-effective programs; and 1-8 WHEREAS, To better accomplish their goals, these agencies 1-9 have forged many successful partnerships with organizations from 1-10 both the public and private sectors, including the National Cancer 1-11 Society, the American Red Cross, local chambers of commerce, 1-12 educational institutions, faith-based organizations, community 1-13 health agencies, and commercial housing developers; and 1-14 WHEREAS, Community Action Agencies are governed by a board 1-15 composed of representatives from their respective communities, 1-16 including locally elected officials, business entities, and 1-17 individuals on limited incomes; this structure allows community 1-18 members to address the needs of their own area and to improve the 1-19 living conditions of those in need in their community; and 1-20 WHEREAS, Endeavoring to ensure that all citizens live in 1-21 dignity is truly an admirable undertaking, and it is a privilege to 1-22 honor the Community Action Agencies in Texas and the United States 1-23 as they continue to wage war on poverty; now, therefore, be it 1-24 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas 2-1 Legislature hereby recognize May 2001 as Community Action Month in 2-2 the Lone Star State and commend all the members of Texas' Community 2-3 Action Agencies for their hard work and dedication.
