                                 R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, Vicente N. Carranza of Corpus Christi was accorded a
 1-2     great honor when he was named Small Business Journalist of the Year
 1-3     for 2001 by the United States Small Business Administration; and
 1-4           WHEREAS, Since September 19, 1994, Mr. Carranza has hosted
 1-5     the top-rated Spanish two-hour talk radio program, Verdades y
 1-6     Chismes, which addresses local, state, and national issues
 1-7     impacting small businesses and their communities; he is also the
 1-8     host of Corazon y Alma Canta, a radio program on the history of
 1-9     Tejano music; and
1-10           WHEREAS, Integral to the creation of five local programs for
1-11     public access television, Mr. Carranza moderates a  roundtable
1-12     interview show that features discussions of various business,
1-13     cultural, and community topics, and he has produced and hosted the
1-14     one-hour program Smoking Mirror since February 18, 2000; he also
1-15     cohosts a half-hour program, Adios al Dolor, for the local
1-16     Telemundo, and in 1998 he produced a Sunday television variety show
1-17     titled La Gente; and
1-18           WHEREAS, Contributing news, feature stories, editorials,
1-19     columns, and commentary that highlight and analyze small business
1-20     issues, particularly those relating to the "New Markets,"
1-21     Mr. Carranza is a journalist for several print and electronic media
1-22     publications and a freelance writer for a monthly radio newspaper
1-23     and for Nuestra Vidas magazine; and
1-24           WHEREAS, This esteemed gentleman has been instrumental to the
 2-1     revitalization of small businesses in the Coastal Bend region,
 2-2     especially in the Corpus Christi business district and downtown
 2-3     area; in that regard, he has sponsored and supported various local
 2-4     cultural initiatives in genres ranging from folklorico dance to
 2-5     Third World visual art in the Coastal Bend region to Hispanic art,
 2-6     ballet, church choirs, photography, and much more; and
 2-7           WHEREAS, Mr. Carranza is a staunch advocate for the small
 2-8     businesses in his area and for the multiculturalism that makes
 2-9     Corpus Christi such a vital community, and his tireless efforts and
2-10     many successes have earned him this prestigious accolade as well as
2-11     the gratitude of his community and the Lone Star State; now,
2-12     therefore, be it
2-13           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas
2-14     Legislature hereby congratulate Vicente N. Carranza on being named
2-15     the 2001 Small Business Journalist of the Year and extend to him
2-16     best wishes for continued success and happiness; and, be it further
2-17           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-18     prepared for Mr. Carranza as an expression of high regard by the
2-19     Texas House of Representatives.
