                                 R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, On June 8-9, 2001, Texans will be joined by
 1-2     relatives from Atlanta, Phoenix, Washington, D.C., Kansas City,
 1-3     Missouri, Kansas City, Kansas, and other locales for the
 1-4     Taylor-Fields-Hobby family reunion in Austin; and
 1-5           WHEREAS, More than 200 individuals are expected to attend the
 1-6     annual gathering, which begins with "welcoming" activities on
 1-7     Friday evening in the Oak Room of the Chariot Inn; and
 1-8           WHEREAS, The Taylor-Fields-Hobby family has deep roots in the
 1-9     Lone Star State; forebears of today's reunion participants
1-10     contributed in countless ways to the multicultural history of the
1-11     state, particularly in the Austin and Travis County area; and
1-12           WHEREAS, Maude Estelle Fields Taylor and her husband, Monroe,
1-13     are two of the beloved ancestors honored by today's celebrants;
1-14     Mrs. Taylor played a key role in bringing natural gas across East
1-15     Avenue (IH 35), making it available to East Austin residents;
1-16     Mr. Taylor, a Calcasieu foreman, was a gifted baseball player whose
1-17     love of the sport influenced his son, Vernon "Tito" Taylor, who
1-18     became an organizer and player for the Austin Black Senators and
1-19     the Palominos and later played with the Kansas City Monarchs and
1-20     the Detroit Stars; and
1-21           WHEREAS, Inspiring the younger generations are numerous
1-22     esteemed members of the family who have been successful in a
1-23     variety of professions, including sports, education, business, and
1-24     the ministry; noted for accomplishments in their respective fields
 2-1     are football greats Thomas "Hollywood" Henderson and Edgar Fields,
 2-2     businessman and athlete Brady Keys, local activists Ora Lee Taylor
 2-3     Nobles and Julia Faye Taylor Mitchell, and retired Lieutenant
 2-4     Colonel Gary C. Powell, a senior operations manager for Dell
 2-5     Computer Corporation; and
 2-6           WHEREAS, Through the years, the contributions made by members
 2-7     of the Taylor-Fields-Hobby family have been interwoven in the
 2-8     compelling story of Texas, and it is indeed fitting that they be
 2-9     acknowledged at this time; now, therefore, be it
2-10           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas
2-11     Legislature hereby recognize June 8-9, 2001, as Taylor-Fields-Hobby
2-12     Family Reunion Days in Austin and that this year's participants be
2-13     extended sincere best wishes for an enjoyable event.
