R E S O L U T I O N
1-1 WHEREAS, The Lone Star State lost a truly great man on
1-2 February 1, 2001, when Rex Ivey of Alpine passed away at the age of
1-3 90; and
1-4 WHEREAS, A rancher and businessman, Mr. Ivey came to the Big
1-5 Bend area in the 1920s as a fur trapper before settling permanently
1-6 in the region in the 1930s; and
1-7 WHEREAS, In 1942 he purchased the Lajitas Resort, a
1-8 well-known trading post and gathering spot for travelers en route
1-9 to Big Bend National Park, Big Bend State Park, and San Carlos in
1-10 Chihuahua; once known as the "hub of the border," its most famous
1-11 attraction was Clay Henry III, the beer-drinking goat; and
1-12 WHEREAS, In 1977, Mr. Ivey sold Lajitas and soon thereafter
1-13 purchased Terlingua, and he and his son formed the Terlingua
1-14 Foundation to restore the ghost town; in addition, he served
1-15 several years as a Brewster County commissioner, imported
1-16 candelilla wax from Mexico, and sold goods to people on both sides
1-17 of the border; and
1-18 WHEREAS, Known for his colorful personality, this memorable
1-19 Texan was an excellent storyteller and a skilled weatherman who
1-20 used his own unique methods for determining the weather; and
1-21 WHEREAS, A legend in the Big Bend region, Rex Ivey stood tall
1-22 in the eyes of his fellow Texans, and his memory will live on in
1-23 the hearts of all who were privileged to know him; now, therefore,
1-24 be it
2-1 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas
2-2 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Rex Ivey and extend
2-3 sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his son and
2-4 daughter-in-law, Bill and Lisa Ivey; to his grandsons, Zane and
2-5 Cody Ivey; and to his other relatives and many friends; and, be it
2-6 further
2-7 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-8 prepared for his family, and that when the Texas House of
2-9 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Rex Ivey.
