R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, Lucile Hendricks of McAllen has contributed 1-2 enormously to her city through her 50 years of wide-ranging 1-3 community involvement; and 1-4 WHEREAS, Known for her efforts as a civic activist, 1-5 environmentalist, social worker, and club woman, Mrs. Hendricks has 1-6 won the respect of several generations of city leaders through her 1-7 knowledge of local issues and her readiness to speak up about 1-8 matters of community concern; and 1-9 WHEREAS, Her resume includes service as president of the 1-10 McAllen school board--the first woman elected to such a board in 1-11 Hidalgo County--and the institution of significant improvements in 1-12 the district's schools; and 1-13 WHEREAS, Mrs. Hendricks has enjoyed the respect not only of 1-14 her peers but also of McAllen's youth, among whom she has worked to 1-15 foster good citizenship and love of country; she has also been an 1-16 ardent supporter of music education and was a cofounder of the Rio 1-17 Grande Valley International Music Festival, which provides a series 1-18 of concerts for schoolchildren in addition to opera and symphony 1-19 and pops concerts; and 1-20 WHEREAS, This outstanding citizen was honored last year at a 1-21 "Life with Lucile" dinner, an immensely successful event that 1-22 raised some $20,000 for her beloved music festival; during the 1-23 evening, Railroad Commissioner Tony Garza read tributes to 1-24 Mrs. Hendricks from Governor George W. Bush, Senators Kay Bailey 2-1 Hutchison and Phil Gramm, Texas Attorney General John Cornyn, and 2-2 former president George Bush and his wife, Barbara; and 2-3 WHEREAS, Mrs. Hendricks has immeasurably enriched the lives 2-4 of countless fellow citizens, and her five decades of staunch 2-5 public advocacy are indeed deserving of special tribute; now, 2-6 therefore, be it 2-7 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas 2-8 Legislature hereby honor Lucile Hendricks for her exemplary public 2-9 service and extend to her sincere appreciation for her civic 2-10 contributions; and, be it further 2-11 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-12 prepared for Mrs. Hendricks as an expression of high regard by the 2-13 Texas House of Representatives.
