R E S O L U T I O N
1-1 WHEREAS, The passing of Robert Lord Gilmartin of McAllen on
1-2 January 20, 2001, at the age of 57, has brought a great loss to the
1-3 family and many friends of this beloved gentleman; and
1-4 WHEREAS, Born on August 8, 1943, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania,
1-5 he came to Houston as a teenager; in 1965, he graduated from Notre
1-6 Dame University with a degree in communication arts, and moved to
1-7 Rosenberg, Texas, to work with KFRD Radio and the Herald Coaster
1-8 newspaper as a sportswriter; he was next employed with United Press
1-9 International as a correspondent based in Little Rock, Arkansas;
1-10 and
1-11 WHEREAS, Mr. Gilmartin began his television career as a
1-12 producer for local stations in St. Louis, Missouri, and Cincinnati,
1-13 Ohio; he returned to Houston as news director of KHOU-TV, followed
1-14 by similar posts in Buffalo, New York; San Antonio; and Corpus
1-15 Christi; and
1-16 WHEREAS, During his distinguished career, Mr. Gilmartin was
1-17 involved with a public television station in Laredo, hosted a
1-18 weekly KVET Radio show, "Truth of Austin," and he pursued
1-19 additional endeavors as a businessman and news consultant; his most
1-20 recent projects in the Valley included hosting and producing
1-21 "Borderline," a popular current events television program, and
1-22 developing "Living Histories," which are video records of the
1-23 region's pioneer families; and
1-24 WHEREAS, He was deeply devoted to his family and an active
2-1 member of a number of worthy civic organizations, including the
2-2 McAllen Rotary and Elks clubs and the Knights of Columbus; and
2-3 WHEREAS, Those who were privileged to share the friendship of
2-4 Mr. Gilmartin will long miss his presence, and he will surely be
2-5 remembered with great affection and admiration for many years to
2-6 come; now, therefore, be it
2-7 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas
2-8 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Robert Lord Gilmartin
2-9 and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his
2-10 wife, Ofelia Gilmartin; to his daughter, Stephanie Gottula; to his
2-11 mother, Mary Lord Gilmartin; to his sisters, Mary Green, Patricia
2-12 Gilmartin, and Anne Spensley; to his brother, David Gilmartin; and
2-13 to the other relatives and many friends of this fine man; and, be
2-14 it further
2-15 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-16 prepared for his family and when the Texas House of Representatives
2-17 adjourn this day, it do so in memory of Robert Lord Gilmartin.
