No. 833 77R12166 MW-D R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The McAllen Kiwanis Club is celebrating its 65th 1-2 anniversary, and this occasion provides an opportunity to pay 1-3 tribute to this fine organization for its legacy of good works; and 1-4 WHEREAS, Chartered in 1935, the McAllen Kiwanis Club has an 1-5 impressive record of successful and worthwhile projects; it 1-6 conducted the only Christmas tree sale in McAllen in the 1930s and 1-7 later that same decade, established the McAllen Child Clinic to 1-8 provide medical care for indigent children; and 1-9 WHEREAS, In the 1950s, the Kiwanis Distributors Fruitcakes 1-10 project became remarkably profitable, and the operation expanded as 1-11 far as the Oklahoma region; another long-running annual project 1-12 that began in the 1950s used Army surplus field kitchen equipment 1-13 to prepare food for an annual Pancake Supper; the McAllen Kiwanis 1-14 members also sold imported Mexican honey they bottled in Frankoma 1-15 pottery containers; and 1-16 WHEREAS, Now, the Kiwanis raises funds with an Apple Sale in 1-17 the fall and a barbeque dinner in the spring; proceeds go to 1-18 benefit the Homer Morris, the Bill Whalen, the Dr. Ricardo Chapa, 1-19 and the Malcolm Welch scholarship programs, as well as numerous 1-20 Valley organizations and charities; and 1-21 WHEREAS, Over the years, this noteworthy organization has 1-22 proven itself to be a major contributor to the success and 1-23 well-being of the Rio Grande Valley community, and its 65th 1-24 anniversary indeed merits legislative recognition; now, therefore, 2-1 be it 2-2 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas 2-3 Legislature hereby congratulate the McAllen Kiwanis Club on its 2-4 65th anniversary and extend to its members sincere best wishes for 2-5 success in all their future endeavors.
