                                 R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, The State of Texas lost a distinguished public
 1-2     servant with the passing of the Honorable Renato Cuellar on April
 1-3     5, 2001, at the age of 73; and
 1-4           WHEREAS, Beginning with the 70th Legislative Session, this
 1-5     outstanding elected official ably served the needs of his
 1-6     constituents for 10 years, and his legislative initiatives included
 1-7     expanding and improving institutions of higher education in the
 1-8     Valley and creating an area diabetes registry; and
 1-9           WHEREAS, Mr. Cuellar was also an active and informed voice in
1-10     the committee process and served on the house appropriations, human
1-11     services, and state, federal, and international relations
1-12     committees; moreover, he was vice chairman of the agriculture and
1-13     livestock and rules and resolutions committees; and
1-14           WHEREAS, In addition to his achievements as a house member,
1-15     he brought his knowledge and integrity to the position of Hidalgo
1-16     County judge, stepping in where needed to complete an unexpired
1-17     term in that demanding office; and
1-18           WHEREAS, Mr. Cuellar also served his nation with distinction
1-19     in World War II and the Korean War and devoted his time and energy
1-20     to such worthy civic organizations as the Boys and Girls Club, Mid
1-21     Valley Lions Club, and Weslaco Chamber of Commerce; and
1-22           WHEREAS, Throughout the course of his tenure as a public
1-23     servant, Mr. Cuellar demonstrated a steadfast belief in the
1-24     democratic process and devoted his efforts to making government
 2-1     work for the benefit of all its citizens; although his spirit is
 2-2     gone from us now, his legacy of achievement will live on for
 2-3     generations to come; now, therefore, be it
 2-4           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas
 2-5     Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of the Honorable Renato
 2-6     Cuellar and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family:
 2-7     to his wife, Maria Elena Cuellar; to his children, Renato, Gerrie,
 2-8     Shirley, Nancy, Robert, Edna, and Arthur; to his grandchildren and
 2-9     great-grandchildren; and to the other relatives and many friends of
2-10     this fine man; and, be it further
2-11           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-12     prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas
2-13     House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of
2-14     Renato Cuellar.
