R E S O L U T I O N
1-1 WHEREAS, Henry Cisneros was named chairman of the San Antonio
1-2 Hispanic Chamber of Commerce on February 1, 2001, and it is indeed
1-3 appropriate to take this opportunity to recognize this notable
1-4 Texan for his significant contributions to the City of San Antonio,
1-5 to the Lone Star State, and to the United States; and
1-6 WHEREAS, Mr. Cisneros was elected mayor of the City of San
1-7 Antonio in 1981, becoming the first Hispanic American mayor of a
1-8 major U.S. city; during his four terms in office he led efforts to
1-9 rebuild the city's economic base and make much-needed
1-10 infrastructure improvements, and he received well-deserved acclaim,
1-11 including selection as Outstanding Mayor in the nation by City and
1-12 State magazine, for his accomplishments; and
1-13 WHEREAS, After his exemplary mayoral tenure, Mr. Cisneros was
1-14 chosen to serve in the cabinet of President Bill Clinton; from 1993
1-15 to 1997, he served as the secretary of the U.S. Department of
1-16 Housing and Urban Development, a position in which he led a major
1-17 revitalization of the nation's public housing developments as well
1-18 as formulated and implemented policies that benefit today's
1-19 homeowners; and
1-20 WHEREAS, He later worked as president and CEO of Univision
1-21 Communications, the Spanish-language television station that is the
1-22 fifth most-watched network in the nation, and more recently he has
1-23 been active as the founder and chairman of American CityVista, a
1-24 homebuilding joint venture formed in August 2000; and
2-1 WHEREAS, Mr. Cisneros earned bachelor's and master's degrees
2-2 from Texas A&M University, a master's degree from Harvard, and a
2-3 doctorate from George Washington University, in addition to having
2-4 been awarded more than 20 honorary doctorates from leading
2-5 universities; he has served as president of the National League of
2-6 Cities, chairman of the National Civic League, deputy chair of the
2-7 Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, and board member of the Rockefeller
2-8 Foundation; and
2-9 WHEREAS, San Antonio, Texas, and the United States have all
2-10 benefited immeasurably from his outstanding contributions, and it
2-11 is most appropriate to commend him for his public service and to
2-12 congratulate him on his recent achievement; now, therefore, be it
2-13 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas
2-14 Legislature hereby applaud Henry Cisneros for his myriad good works
2-15 in behalf of our state and nation and extend to him sincere best
2-16 wishes for the future; and, be it further
2-17 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-18 prepared for Mr. Cisneros as an expression of high regard by the
2-19 Texas House of Representatives.
