                                 R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives is pleased to
 1-2     congratulate the Spring Hill High School Leaders' Core from
 1-3     Longview on its receipt of a prestigious Governor's Volunteer Award
 1-4     and to welcome its members to the State Capitol on this day; and
 1-5           WHEREAS, The Governor's Volunteer Awards are presented to
 1-6     Texans who demonstrate an exemplary commitment to community and
 1-7     service to others; one of only 10 recipients of a 2001 Governor's
 1-8     Volunteer Award, the Spring Hill High School Leaders' Core received
 1-9     the award at a ceremony held at the Governor's Mansion on April 24,
1-10     2001, during National Volunteer Week; and
1-11           WHEREAS, This outstanding group is composed of numerous
1-12     civic-minded students who are endeavoring to put their idealism and
1-13     determination to work to improve their community; and
1-14           WHEREAS, In attendance today at the State Capitol are Sara
1-15     Canter, Summer Medlin, and Aaron Vickery, as well as student
1-16     advisor and director Holly Whittington; and
1-17           WHEREAS, These fine young people researched and developed a
1-18     plan to benefit their community and raised more than $75,000
1-19     through grants, donations, and fund-raisers; over two years, the
1-20     group donated roughly 3,000 hours of time to building a park and
1-21     playground in a low-income neighborhood, and their efforts included
1-22     gathering demographic data, surveying area residents, and
1-23     identifying an appropriate site; and
 2-1           WHEREAS, The students fostered relationships and partnerships
 2-2     with local businesses that donated various services to the project;
 2-3     they also raised the necessary funds through flower and plant
 2-4     sales, car washes, and the sale of cookbooks and engraved bricks;
 2-5     and
 2-6           WHEREAS, Through their actions, the members of the Spring
 2-7     Hill High School Leaders' Core have enabled countless children to
 2-8     enjoy a new playground and park, and it is a privilege to recognize
 2-9     these caring Texans at this time; now, therefore, be it
2-10           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas
2-11     Legislature hereby congratulate the Spring Hill High School
2-12     Leaders' Core on its receipt of a Governor's Volunteer Award and
2-13     commend its members for their selfless service to others; and, be
2-14     it further
2-15           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-16     prepared for the members of the Spring Hill High School Leaders'
2-17     Core as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of
2-18     Representatives.
